Position Description:

The University of Louisville School of Nursing seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Professor (Open Rank) of Nursing and Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Mentoring. This position provides strategic leadership in fostering faculty excellence, career advancement, and professional growth across all academic programs. The Associate Dean will design, implement, and oversee comprehensive faculty development initiatives while establishing robust mentoring programs that support faculty at all career stages.  The workload distribution of this position will include time for the individual’s scholarly activity with a focus on external funding at the federal level.

Key Responsibilities

Faculty Development Leadership

  • Develop and implement comprehensive faculty development programs aligned with institutional strategic goals
  • Design professional development opportunities for faculty across teaching, research, practice and service domains
  • Create and manage faculty orientation programs for new hires
  • Establish continuing education and professional growth pathways for all faculty ranks
  • Coordinate with academic affairs to align faculty development with curriculum and program needs
  • Design and oversee formal mentoring programs for junior faculty, clinical faculty, and teaching-focused faculty
  • Establish mentoring frameworks that support faculty advancement and retention
  • Train senior faculty as mentors and provide ongoing support for mentoring relationships
  • Monitor and evaluate mentoring program effectiveness and outcomes
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary mentoring opportunities within the university
  • Faculty Support and Resources

Mentoring Program Administration

  • Provide individualized career counseling and guidance to faculty members
  • Assist faculty with promotion and tenure preparation and processes
  • Coordinate faculty sabbatical and leave programs
  • Oversee faculty awards and recognition programs (internal and external to the SON)
  • Manage faculty development budget and resources

Research and Scholarship Support

This leadership position will work in partnership with the associate deans to:

  • Support faculty research development and grant-seeking activities
  • Facilitate research collaboration and interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Coordinate research mentoring programs for faculty
  • Promote scholarship in nursing education and practice
  • Assist with research compliance and ethical considerations

Academic Leadership

  • Serve as a key member of the School of Nursing leadership team
  • Participate in strategic planning and policy development
  • Represent the School at university committees and external professional organizations
  • Collaborate with other academic units on faculty development initiatives
  • Contribute to accreditation and quality assurance activities

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Doctoral degree in Nursing (PhD or DNP) or related field
  • Active, unencumbered nursing license

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in nursing education at the collegiate level
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic administration or faculty development
  • Proven track record in mentoring and supporting faculty career advancement
  • Experience with faculty evaluation, promotion, and tenure processes

Skills And Competencies

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills
  • Expertise in adult learning principles and faculty development best practices
  • Knowledge of higher education governance and academic policies
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and initiatives
  • Proficiency in data analysis and program evaluation methods
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of faculty development

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Experience

  • Experience as Department Chair, Program Director, or similar academic leadership role
  • Background in curriculum development and educational innovation
  • Grant writing and research funding experience

Professional Engagement

  • Active membership in professional nursing organizations
  • Record of scholarly publications in nursing education or related fields
  • Experience presenting at national conferences on faculty development topics
  • Certification in coaching, mentoring, or organizational development

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with learning management systems and educational technology
  • Experience with faculty information systems and academic databases
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards for nursing education programs

Position Details

Appointment Type

  • Full-Time, 12-Month Appointment

  • Faculty rank commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • The selected candidate must meet the criteria for tenure at the associate or full professor rank
  • 50% commitment to personal research area.  Preference given to a candidate that aligns with the School of Nursing research interests (health equity and population health, mental health and patient safety and models of care).  In addition, candidates with an oncology research focus may have the opportunity for graduate student support and collaboration with Brown Cancer Center and School of Medicine researchers.
  • 30-40% Administrative Role

  • Remaining effort distributed to research, teaching and service

Reporting Structure

  • Reports directly to the Dean of the School of Nursing
  • Supervises faculty development staff and graduate assistants
  • Collaborates closely with Associate Deans for Academic Affairs and Research
  • Occasional travel for professional conferences and meetings
  • Regional travel to support faculty development initiatives
  • Estimated travel: 10-15% of time
