Position Summary
As a Surgical Technologist at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, you will work closely with surgeons and physicians to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures across a range of specialties. Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, you will be an integral part of the operating room team—ensuring optimal surgical outcomes through your expertise in sterile technique, instrumentation, and surgical processes.
This is a part-time position (24 hours/week) on the day shift and includes rotating weekends and holiday coverage.

This position is part of the Surgical Technologist Career Ladder at Baystate Health. Placement within the ladder is based on a combination of education, certification, and relevant experience:
Surgical Technologist I
- Associate of Science in Surgical Technology or completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program
Ast Certification*
- CPR Certification – American Heart Association BLS
- *Certification required if no surgical facility experience prior to July 1, 2013
Surgical Technologist Ii
- Meets all Surg Tech I qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of surgical technologist experience
- At least 1 year of employment at Baystate OR 2 years of comparable external experience
- Completion of orientation competencies
Surgical Technologist Iii
- Meets all Surg Tech I qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of surgical technologist experience
- At least 1 year of employment at Baystate Health
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain safety and proper function of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Collaborate as a core member of the surgical team, informed by the patient’s care plan.
- Administer and handle medications in the sterile field according to protocol.
- Monitor and maintain a sterile, safe environment during procedures.
- Document tasks and maintain compliance with scope of practice.
- Ensure accurate handling of specimens and use of proper labeling practices.
- Demonstrate strong communication, knowledge of medical terminology, and anticipation of procedural needs.
- Participate in safety initiatives, such as sharps protection and temperature regulation.
What You’Ll Need
Required:
- Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or equivalent structured training
- AST Certification (or ability to obtain if required)
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association
Preferred:
- Previous surgical technologist experience is preferred but not required
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficient in sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and anatomy
- Adaptability in a fast-paced surgical environment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team
- Commitment to patient safety and high-quality care
