Chief Audio Engineer

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a Master’s, a Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and two (2) years of practical work experience in recording and live sound engineering in an academic or professional setting may be considered. Three (3) years of practical work experience in recording and live sound engineering in an academic or professional setting. Production experience in an academic or professional setting. Working knowledge of audio/video recording hardware and software. Experience with live-streaming and video-editing. Experience with audio/video engineering for live concerts, including amplification, signal processing, playback, and multi-media coordination. Experience supervising staff. Must be able to remain stationary for long periods and frequently move audio visual equipment such as speakers and interfaces weighing 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional Certificate, Associate, Bachelors, Masters (foreign equivalent or higher) Degree in Audio Engineering, Video Production, Sound Recording Technology, or Music. Additional years of practical work experience in recording and live audio/video engineering in an academic or professional setting. Experience with live event production. Experience troubleshooting and/or repairing audio and video equipment, analog audio equipment, and electronic instruments used in performance spaces, recording spaces, and used as classroom technology in music courses. Experience in the creation of video production assets. Broad knowledge of Western Classical and Contemporary Music. 

Brief Description of Duties:
Stony Brook University is seeking a full-time Chief Audio/Video Engineer to join the dynamic Music Department at SUNY’s flagship institution. This key role supports faculty and students in all aspects of audio/video recording, live streaming, concert production, and education. The engineer leads the recording and streaming of major concerts and faculty events, oversees a team of graduate assistants handling recitals and chamber performances, and helps shape the department’s future growth. 

The Engineer coordinates audio and video concert support in consultation with the Director of Concerts/Music Events Office and supervises graduate assistants, as well as catalogues and tracks a large inventory of audio and video gear. The position requires knowledge of classical music, recording and sound-reinforcement techniques, audio/video internet streaming, and the ability to communicate effectively and timely with faculty, staff, and our high-level, pre-professional graduate student body.

Responsibilities also include recommending equipment purchases, the acquisition and installation of new equipment, support and trouble-shooting for general classroom technology as needed, as well as maintaining equipment in venue recording spaces, and the analogue and computer-music studios. Ideal candidates will support a dynamic, creative community of performers, scholars, and composers.

The Incumbent Must Possess:

• The ability to coordinate and track a large number of ongoing projects.
• Ability to work independently, and on a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff from all areas of the department.

Duties:

• Record and live-stream major departmental ensemble concerts in Recital Hall and on Main Stage (Stony Brook Symphony, Contemporary Chamber Players, Baroque Ensemble, etc.) as well as faculty concerts (special post-Emerson events, Starry Nights, etc.). Train and supervise recording TA’s and interns to record other concerts including Final DMA Recitals and Composers Concerts. Post-produce concerts, and train recording TA’s to post-produce concert, for archival purposes.
• Maintain and/or upgrade (as appropriate) recording and streaming equipment in the Recital Hall, Main Stage of Staller Center, and Music Department. Maintain and/or upgrade (as appropriate) audio and video equipment for use in Recital Hall Concerts. Maintain and suggest improvements to a functioning analog studio with Buchla and Moog synthesizers and reel-to-reel tape machines, and the audio components of a multi-user digital audio studio, a multi-channel/ambisonics studio and a recording studio. Maintain, repair, and advise on replacement of other Music Department audio/video equipment.
• Advise on replacement of Staller Center audio/video equipment. Work with faculty to plan equipment purchases and development of studio and recording spaces. Install new equipment. Catalogue and oversee inventory of 200+ items audio/video equipment to loan to students and faculty working on special projects.
• Work with Music Department Concert Manager and TA’s to provide audio/video equipment for concerts as needed, including very occasional off-campus concerts. Oversee system for making requests for this equipment. Oversee TA assignments to run equipment in concerts as needed (as distinct from recording concerts).
• Hold workshops for performance students in recording techniques. Develop and publish protocols and instructions for student self-recording of non-final degree recitals. Assist faculty, undergraduate and graduate students with live electronic and recording projects. 
• Other duties or projects as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
• Special Notes: 
• This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
• In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
• For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
• Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
