The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics division of Endocrinology is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our nationally ranked team.  This position will work with indirect and direct supervision with our faculty positions to facilitate care of this specific population in the outpatient setting. The APP will work in collaboration with attending physicians, while exercising autonomy within their scope of practice, as outlined by applicable state law, regulations, institutional policies and practice agreements to provide excellent clinical care for patients in the Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic.

The APP will provide direct independent patient care to infants, children, and young adults in the Pediatric Endocrinology clinic setting. The APP will provide comprehensive health history, physical assessments, establish medical diagnoses, order and evaluate diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans. 

The position will be based out of the main campus location, but the APP may be expected to travel to outreach locations after successful completion of clinical orientation. Travel will be required; percentage of travel commitment can be discussed with Supervisor. This is a full-time position with standard hours Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. However, a flexible schedule of four 10-hour workdays may be available for the right candidate. 

Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate healthcare for infants, children, and young adults seen within the Pediatric Endocrinology Division.
  • Perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and prescribe within their scope of practice as described in state and federal laws, including but not limited to, the following:
  • Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Initiates appropriate referrals and consultations and identify expected outcomes for diagnoses
  • Collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as part of a team.
  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards.
  • Provide health education to patients and families; participates in development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Provide education and service as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise, and to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
  • Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns.
  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participates in the professional development of others, which may include APP students, residents, and medical students. Acts as a preceptor or mentor for those new in the department.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
  • Participates in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings.
  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of collaborative practices agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing or Iowa Board of Physician Assistants, and UI Health Standards.

About Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

The nationally recognized Division of Endocrinology & Diabetes has a tripartite mission by (i) providing expert care to children and adolescents with endocrine disorders, (ii) delivering award-winning endocrinology-related medical education, and (iii) conducting clinical and basic research to help address knowledge gaps in the field. The endocrine team is known for providing compassionate endocrine care coupled to expert diagnostic workup, treatment, and patient education. The team is headed by one dozen faculty physicians and subspecialty trained pediatric nurse practitioners. These providers collaborate with certified diabetes educators, endocrine nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and social workers to provide personalized care. The faculty consistently earns outstanding patient satisfaction scores. The endocrine faculty expertise is recognized regionally, nationally, and even internationally. All our faculty are board certified/eligible in the subspecialty of pediatric endocrinology.

 

Qualifications

 

Education Required:

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 
  • Current certification as Physician Assistant. 
  • Current license to practice as a physician assistant in the State of Iowa.

Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision, critical thinking/problem solving skills and is attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Federal Dea License.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience or previous experience that demonstrates knowledge in the clinical care of pediatric patients. 
  • Knowledge and experience in child and adolescent psychiatry and or developmental pediatrics. 
  • Knowledge and experience in mental health. 
  • Knowledge and experience in ambulatory care.
