TxDOT's Austin District Travis South Area Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer II, III, IV or V (Lead Worker) located in Austin, Texas. This position performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Engineer V is reserved for a Lead Worker position.

This position is for ONE Transportation Engineer II, III, IV or V (Lead Worker). The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Salary Plan/Grade:

  • Transportation Engineer II:   B25 ($69,572.00 - $95,000.00/yearly)
  • Transportation Engineer III:  B26 ($76,530.00 - $101,000.00/yearly)
  • Transportation Engineer IV:  B27 ($84,182.00 - $115,000.00/yearly)
  • Transportation Engineer V:   B28 ($92,600.00 - $125,000.00/yearly)
 

Minimum Salary

: 69,572.00  

Maximum Salary

: 114,099.00    

Pay Basis

Position Description

 

This position performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Responsibilities of a Transportation Engineer II, III, IV or V:

  • Assists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.
  • Oversees contracts, issues work orders and monitors construction schedules and contractor payments and job progress on construction projects.
  • Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support
  • Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle. 

Additional Responsibilities of a Transportation Engineer III, IV or V:

  • Conducts pre-construction meetings and public hearings.
  • Develops and reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
  • Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
  • Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.

Additional Responsibilities of a Transportation Engineer IV or V:

  • Coordinates and monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Develops plans for the Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.
  • Trains Engineering Staff.

Additional Responsibilities of a Transportation Engineer V:

  • Analyzes schedule trends, determines risks and recommends options to management for corrective action for highly complex projects.
  • Conducts final inspections on completed construction projects
  • Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience 
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Transportation Engineer IV: 7 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Transportation Engineer V: 8YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses And Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
