American Wheatley is a growing, ASME-certified fabrication shop specializing in high-quality welding and pressure vessel manufacturing. We pride ourselves on craftsmanship, safety, and teamwork. We are currently seeking an experienced Lead Welder to join our night shift team and help drive quality, productivity, and training within the shop.
Position Summary
The Lead Welder is responsible for assembly and welding of custom bladder tanks, strainers, and valve products and overseeing welding operations in accordance with ASME requirements and shop standards. This role provides technical guidance, ensures weld quality, monitors shift productivity, and acts as a hands-on leader to support welders and fitters on the night shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and perform welding operations (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW) on carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials in compliance with ASME Section IX requirements.
- Review blueprints, weld maps, and specifications to ensure compliance with project standards.
- Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and code compliance before submission to QA/QC.
- Provide training, mentoring, and support to welders and helpers on shift.
- Assign work tasks, monitor progress, and ensure production schedules are met.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment; enforce shop safety standards.
- Collaborate with QA/QC and supervisors to address issues and implement corrective actions.
- Complete shift reports, documenting progress, issues, and workforce needs.
Requirements
Required:
- 5+ years of welding experience
- Must be skilled in at least 2 of the following processes GMAW, FCAW
- Must pass a 3g plate test in mig/fluxcore
- Must be proficient in ASME codes
- Must be able to use positioners and pinwheels
- Must have demonstrated experience with set up, layout, blueprint reading, weld symbols, and joint configuration
- Must be familiar with mismatch tolerances
- Must be skilled fitter with verifiable experience
Physical Requirements
The following physical activities are essential to successfully perform this job:
- Standing/Walking: Up to 6 hours per shift
- Lifting/Carrying: Regular lifting of materials up to 50 lbs
- Bending/Stooping/Kneeling: Frequent throughout shift
- Reaching/Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands and arms for tool operation and assembly work
- Vision/Hearing/Communication: Clear vision and hearing required for safety and effective communication
- Pushing/Pulling/Climbing: Periodic pushing or pulling of equipment or materials; occasional ladder use

Work Environment:
This position is based in a welding and fabrication facility with exposure to typical industrial shop conditions. The environment may include:
- Exposure to heat, sparks, smoke, and fumes from welding operations
- Moderate to loud noise levels from machinery and tools
- Must be willing and able to work outside in a manufacturing / warehouse environment with varying temperatures
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
