Major Responsibilities

Quality Patient Care

  • Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities within the practice, hospital and/or unit.

Direct Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Obtains vital signs as directed by the charge nurse.
  • Transfers patients using proper techniques and body mechanics. Uses CPM properly.
  • Assists patients with ADLs. Records l&Os.
  • Records dietary intake.
  • Assists admission by preparing patient rooms. Orients patient and/or significant other to environment. Records weights on admissions and weekly or as ordered.
  • Conducts patient rounds every two hours to check patient needs, including incontinence. Assists with meal trays and assists patients as needed with meals and menu selections. Serves as companion as needed.
  • Assists nurses with patient requests.
  • Passes ice water, juices, and nourishment at bedside unless physician orders specify differently. Adheres to principles of infection control in performing direct patient care.
  • Completes designated components of the admission assessment. Operates Hoyer lift.
  • Changes bed linens on occupied or unoccupied beds.
  • Assists with patient discharge to include transport of patient to private vehicle. Participates in bowel and bladder protocol.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Indirect Patient Care

  • Keeps patient rooms neat and orderly.
  • Monitors room availability and readiness for new patient. Disposes of biohazardous trash.
  • Separates and distributes linens to patient rooms.
  • Replenishes supplies in patient rooms, such as drinking glasses and writing supplies.
  • Cleans and defrosts refrigerator. Records refrigerator temperature according to required schedule; cleans microwave. Transports specimens if STAT, tube system down or specimen cannot be sent via tube.
  • Obtains and returns telemetry.
  • Notices supply and maintenance problems and/or deviations and reports to charge nurse. Monitors supply and equipment usage, being alert and taking measures to avoid and control waste.
  • Obtains and returns supplies as requested.
  • Performs safety/control checks on unit equipment as per unit standards. Takes necessary safety precautions and reports unsafe situations.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Appropriate Use of the Nursing Process

  • Provides input into the development of the patient's plan of care. Documents on the medical record accurately and legibly.
  • Reports pertinent data to appropriate health care team members. Implements patient care as directed by the nurse assigned to the patient.

Customer Satisfaction

  • Responds promptly to all patient call lights or refers requests to the appropriate nurse. Assists the team in achieving or surpassing 90% on Customer Satisfaction Surveys.
  • Assists and collaborates with co-workers as part of the team.
  • Represents Advocate Health and Nursing through participation in community activities. Handles and follows through on customer complaints and incidents appropriately.

Continuing Education

  • Completes competency checklists within first 90 days.
  • Obtains 12 hours of continuing education, minimum 10% unit specific Completes age specific education, at least 1 hour for each age group Completes annual unit specific technical skills checklist.
Minimum Job Requirements EducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent from an accredited institute and Graduate of an accredited CNA training schoolCertification / License

Valid, active, State of applicable state CNA certification for applicable state locations and State of Alabama CNA certification for AL locations

Frequent exposure to communicable disease, bodily fluids and tissue, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.

Typical Physical Demands

Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries weight up to 50 pounds. Ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols with vision and hearing within normal range to respond to Code alerts and equipment alarms. Work-related stress due to volume and time constraints withirregular working hours.
