The Oncology Nurse Navigator assists in expediting the process for evaluation of cancer patients through a multidisciplinary team approach, coordination of services and scheduling exams, optimizing patient care outcomes.Job Description
Job Duties/Essential Functions
- Job Duties
- Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
- Promotes programs and services to community such as public education events and support groups.
- Coordinates and facilitates cancer support groups
- Establish rapport with referring physicians and offices
- Works closely and communicates effectively and efficiently with staff from Medical, Radiation, and Surgical Oncology offices
- Works closely with patients and their families to identify barriers to care.
- Works within the scope of practice of the defined navigator role to help navigate the cancer patient through his or her cancer care.
- Contacts newly diagnosed cancer patients to offer navigation services
- Begins education and orientation of basic treatment plan and coordination of appointments/services
- Serve as an advocate and is available to answer questions and refers patients to appropriate resources.
- Identifies and coordinates patients for the cancer conferences and multidisciplinary cancer clinics.
- Maintains membership in National Oncology or Navigation groups
Department Specific Duties
Hematology/Oncology and Medical Cancer
- Assists with cancer screening amongst clinics and Mercy
- Facilitates Multi-Disciplinary Clinics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to help ease the burden of cancer treatment with the patient and family.
- Experience in and compassion with assisting patients throughout their treatment process, while working as a part of the multidisciplinary cancer team to help deliver patient-centered care.
- Works closely with patients, families, nurses, health care providers and colleagues to guide through the healthcare system and help coordinate care.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent presentation skills
- Excellent customer relations skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications of Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
- Completes projects as assigned
Professional Experience
- Three years clinical direct or indirect experience in oncology nursing required
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
- Oncology Certified Nurse preferred
Licensure, Certification, Registration
- Currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa required.
- Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training prior to start or transfer date.
