This role requires full time on site presence.

Do you have a passion for the fast pace of live radio and getting out in the community to meet people and tell their stories?

CBC Edmonton is looking for a dynamic and engaging community, weather and traffic reporter for Edmonton AM, our top-rated morning current affairs radio program.

For the first part of your early morning shift, you’ll be in the radio studio or out in the field, delivering the latest traffic and weather information to help our listeners start their day. While on air, you will actively engage with the host, guests and listeners, understanding that audiences want to be both entertained and informed when they tune into Edmonton AM.

During the second half of your day, you will chase and produce compelling interviews and stories that give our audiences a deeper understanding of their community and reflect the top news of the day.

An exceptional journalist and an ambitious self-starter, you must be able to analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of live, local radio within a multiplatform newsroom. You will be comfortable going on the air at any time, reacting to breaking news and changing events, updating and adapting the program as needed.

You will have a sense of adventure, a range of interests and a keen desire to meet new people, explore our province, and learn other perspectives. You are passionate about Edmonton and northern Alberta, and its diversity of people and viewpoints, and you champion stories from under-represented communities.

You will play a key role in helping us grow audiences, whether that’s meeting listeners where they live through in-person public appearances and remote broadcasts, or contributing to and appearing on CBC programming on digital and visual platforms including podcasts, television and social media.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Appear on Edmonton AM live on air weekdays from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., providing updated reports on traffic, weather and current events.
  • Report live from the field, conducting interviews and providing key information to audiences.
  • Interact extemporaneously with program participants such as the program host, guests, reporters, experts and members of the audience.
  • Pitch and produce original stories that deepen Edmonton AM’s community connections, elevate a range of voices and reflect the day’s top local news.
  • Conduct research and interviews, gather and edit audio, write radio scripts, and package and present content.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote Edmonton AM and CBC, with a focus on growing new audiences and building connections.
  • Fill in for the host of Edmonton AM as needed.

Your Profile:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment and in a live program setting.
  • An engaging, curious, and spontaneous on-air personality, with a wide range of interests, knowledge and insight.
  • Strong journalistic skills, demonstrated through original story ideas, live interviewing, innovative storytelling, and writing and vetting abilities.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and breaking news; comfortable going off-script when needed.
  • An understanding of Alberta’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around Edmonton.
  • Familiarity with digital and social storytelling, and a willingness to learn and tackle new tasks across all CBC platforms (TV, radio, digital, social).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and locations.
  • A proven work ethic and a positive team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • A passion for public outreach and an enthusiastic ambassador of public broadcasting and the program.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • University degree or equivalent in a related field, with a minimum of three years of relevant or comparable experience.
