The Team: The Oil Tanker Shipping team is a vital part of the CI (Commodity Insight) Shipping Analytics and Research business line. This team is dedicated to developing and maintaining high-quality market intelligence and research flow for S&P Global Commodity Insight Freight Analytics products. We focus on delivering actionable insights that empower our clients to navigate the complexities of the oil tanker market effectively.
The Impact: As a Principal Research Analyst, you will be instrumental in advancing our research capabilities and enhancing the analytical framework within the Oil Tanker Shipping team. Your role will involve deep analysis of market trends, develop models, and provide insights that directly influence strategic decisions for our clients. You will collaborate closely with senior analysts and cross-functional teams globally to ensure the accuracy and relevance of our research outputs. Your work will help shape our understanding of the oil tanker market and its dynamics, contributing to the overall success of S&P Global’s Freight Analytics products.

Responsibilities:
- Market Intelligence Development: Contribute to the development and maintenance of market intelligence and research flow for S&P Global Commodity Insights Freight Analytics products, ensuring high-quality and relevant data.
- Market Analysis and Insights: Analyze market trends and provide actionable insights for freight markets and trade flows, focusing on liquid bulk commodities, particularly crude oil and refined products.
- Client Visibility: Enhance client visibility into the dynamics of physical trade in liquid bulk and freight markets, providing them with the information needed to make informed decisions.
- Trend Analysis: Conduct in-depth analysis and commentary on current and future trends in liquid bulk commodities and freight markets, including supply and demand analysis based on the Global Shipbuilding Market and Maritime Regulatory Framework.
- Effective Communication: Communicate insights to clients through published reports, presentations, calls, emails, and direct meetings, ensuring clarity and actionable recommendations.
- Collaboration with Teams: Work closely with senior analysts, the Data Analytics team, and Product Management teams to ensure alignment and accuracy of research outputs.
- Original Research and Data Mining: Conduct original research and data mining to identify marketable findings and enhance our research capabilities.
- Documentation of Research Processes: Establish and document research processes and methodologies to create internal standards and best practices.
- Sales Collaboration: Collaborate with Sales teams to analyze reports and effectively communicate insights to customers, enhancing client relationships and driving business growth.
- Project Management: Manage multiple projects and priorities, ensuring timely completion and alignment with team goals and objectives.
What We’Re Looking For:
- Expertise in Market Structure: Strong understanding of market structure and dynamics in liquid bulk shipping, with the ability to analyze and interpret complex data.
- Knowledge of Freight Demand and Supply Drivers: In-depth knowledge of liquid bulk shipping market analysis, including freight demand and supply drivers, supported by a solid understanding of macroeconomic principles.
- Experience in Trading: A minimum of 4years of freight and commodity market experience, with at least 2 years focused on liquid bulk market analytics. Experience in physical and paper (FFA) trading is beneficial.
- Technical Proficiency: A solid technical/academic background in data analytics, machine learning, and economic forecasting models, with the ability to apply these skills to real-world scenarios.
- Numeracy and Communication Skills: Excellent numeracy and written skills, with the ability to handle large data sets from unstructured sources. Strong communication skills are essential for establishing and maintaining professional relationships.
- Collaboration and Independence: Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with global S&P Global teams across different time zones, while managing independent tasks and activities.
- Software Proficiency: Highly skilled in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau and Power BI is advantageous. Knowledge of SQL and/or Python is preferred.
- Educational Background: Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant field, demonstrating a strong foundation in analytical thinking and problem-solving.
Basic Qualifications:
- 4 years of freight and commodity market experience, with 2 years in liquid bulk market analytics experience.
- Degree level education or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI) and programming languages (SQL, Python).
