About The Roles

The Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor (Genomics and Genetics) will contribute to and lead teaching and research in population genomics, ecogenomics, genetics, epigenetics, bioinformatics, and related areas. The appointment will strengthen the Department of Biology’s research in evolutionary biology, environmental adaptation, conservation genomics, ecological genomics, and computational biology.

At Senior Lecturer level (C), you will:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching and course coordination in genomics and genetics.
  • Lead and collaborate on research projects aligned with the School’s priorities.
  • Publish in high-quality outlets and attract competitive research funding.
  • Supervise higher degree by research (HDR) students.
  • Build productive networks across RMIT and with national and international partners.
  • Contribute to program management and support academic excellence in the Department.

At Associate Professor level (D), you will:

  • Provide academic leadership in teaching, research, and program development.
  • Make original and distinguished contributions to the School’s programs.
  • Lead major research teams, secure substantial external funding, and build international research recognition.
  • Shape the strategic direction of the School through governance, leadership roles, and committee participation.
  • Play a key role in mentoring staff, supervising HDR students, and strengthening community and industry partnerships.
  • Be considered for future senior leadership appointments such as Deputy Head of School or Dean.

Both appointments require demonstrated expertise, a strong track record in research, and commitment to delivering innovative teaching and impactful scholarship. Candidates holding current grants in relevant fields will be viewed advantageously.

To be successful for the Level C appointment, you will meet the following Key Selection Criteria: 

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate large courses and prepare and delivery programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including high quality curriculum and program materials and ability to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement.
  • Ability to manage a large program or a number of small programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to support student issues related to effective learning.
  • Emerging nationally recognised research track record in population genomics, ecogenomics, genetics, epigenetics, bioinformatics and/or a related field including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets.
  • Extensive experience in research leadership in population genomics, ecogenomics, genetics, epigenetics, bioinformatics and/or a related field with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort and manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements.
  • Extensive experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage academic program team, supporting scholarly development of less experienced academic staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a university.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment.
  • Mandatory Qualifications: PhD in a related field or approved AQF equivalency with relevant industry experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct an award program/s and implement program improvements and innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement programs.
  • Nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs on the topic of population genomics, ecogenomics, genetics, epigenetics, bioinformatics and/or a related field in high quality outlets and emerging international recognition.
  • Extensive experience in research leadership in the fields of population genomics, ecogenomics, bioinformatics or a similar field with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort, manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in undertaking multidisciplinary research and working in diverse research teams.
  • Extensive experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead scholarly development and manage and supervise academic teams and members.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a University.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment.
  • Proven ability as an effective member of a management team that develops and achieves shared goals and objectives.
  • Mandatory Qualifications: PhD in a related field or approved AQF equivalency with relevant industry experience
