Mission Of The Role

This is for the summer 2026 season. Internship will take place at our Canton, MA office.

As an AI/DL Intern at SICK, you will be immersed in a dynamic environment where cutting-edge artificial intelligence, deep learning, and large language models (LLMs) intersect with core industrial software solutions. In addition to gaining hands-on experience across diverse projects, you will collaborate within a team to enhance SICK’s software suite and develop innovative new products leveraging AI technologies.

This role offers the opportunity to design and implement applications across multiple platforms, specifically integrating AI and deep learning approaches to solve real-world business challenges. You will explore and apply advanced neural networks and LLMs for tasks such as predictive analytics, natural language processing, and intelligent automation. Through exposure to SICK’s broad portfolio of software and hardware, you’ll understand how modern AI solutions can be tailored to meet specific business requirements and industry needs.

Working closely with senior engineers, mentors, and managers, you will:

  • Develop and integrate AI, deep learning, and LLM features into new and existing software products.
  • Analyze software requirements with an emphasis on AI-driven solutions for both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Collaborate with experts to implement business logic informed by state-of-the-art machine learning research.
  • Participate in code reviews, documentation, and software testing phases focused on AI model accuracy and performance.
  • Actively seek knowledge about SICK’s operations, learning how AI technologies can enhance products and business processes.
  • Provide creative recommendations on the adoption and optimization of AI, deep learning, and LLM technologies within SICK’s workflow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, understand software requirements to design and develop applications in both Windows and Linux platforms.
  • Work closely with senior members to understand business logic and domain knowledge of current software platforms.
  • Provide progress updates to Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Provide assistance as required to other senior members of the team in the areas of specific implementation of code, preparing software for testing phases, and documentation.
  • Work on a chosen project with the assistance of the manager, mentor, and team.
  • Work closely with the manager and a selected mentor to understand systems, processes, and key information.
  • Actively seek out information to learn how SICK operates as a business (products, departments, etc.).
  • Interface with other departments and interns to gain knowledge of the business, products, positions, and more.
  • Provide innovative recommendations on how SICK can improve.
  • Complete a final presentation at the close of the internship outlining the involved project(s) and knowledge gained.
  • Provide feedback on the internship experience at the close of the internship.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or required.

Key Qualifications

Qualifications For Ai/Deep Learning Intern:

  • Educational Background: Currently pursuing an Engineering degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • Relevant coursework in machine learning, deep learning, databases and data analysis.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Possesses experience with leading deep learning frameworks, including TensorFlow, Keras, LangChain, LangGraph, RAG pipelines, or PyTorch.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and neural networks.

Data Analysis:

  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex datasets.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Grafana.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and data preprocessing techniques.

Docker And Kubernetes:

  • Knowledge of containerization using Docker.

Knowledge of Kubernetes for orchestration and management of containerized applications.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Familiarity on prompt engineering / model differentiation, RAG index building / retrieval techniques, MCP, LLM based tool calling
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision is a plus.

Compensation

The base salary is one part of our Total Rewards package and is determined within a range.  The starting base salary range for this position is listed below; the actual starting salary will be based on a variety of factors including experience, skill set, education, performance, licenses/certifications, business needs and other job-related factors, as permitted by law.

  • Starting Base Annual Salary Range:  $26 - $36 per hour
  • Bonus Eligibility: This role is NOT eligible for an annual bonus.
