The role involves supporting a range of biomedical activities, including the efficient handling and processing of specimens for analysis, as well as performing routine tasks such as loading specimens onto clinical analysers and assisting with basic machine maintenance. The position also includes conducting basic laboratory investigations under the supervision of Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists. Working on a rotational basis across all areas of Microbiology, the role encompasses responsibilities in data entry, both automated and manual bacteriology, and Serology.

To be able to rotate through all areas of the Laboratories as required (Dependent on experience and training), to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations. 

To prepare and process clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols. 

To work within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of Associate Practitioners.

To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience.

To provide leadership and supervision, as directed, of trainee Medical Laboratory Assistants.

Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff.

Demonstrate on going competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities. 

  • NVQ3, or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Minimum of 3 GCSEs grades A*-C including English, Maths and a Science subject 
  • Desirable: Science A –Levels or a degree entry qualification
  • ECDL or equivalent knowledge
