Description

The University of Rochester’s Department of Mathematics will recruit an outstanding early-career candidate in the area of Applied Mathematics at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. The focus of this hire is to build research strength in core disciplinary areas with the potential for crossdisciplinary collaborations, aligned with the University’s Boundless Possibility strategic plan. We seek candidates having a Ph.D. in pure or applied mathematics, and expertise in areas of applied mathematics, broadly construed. Successful candidates will have research programs related to areas of current University strength and planned growth. Examples include work at the intersection of mathematics and areas such as physics (complex systems and network science, quantum information, novel material), computer science (foundational AI and machine learning, and as tools to advance other applications), biomedical/electrical engineering (imaging and signal processing), geophysical systems (modeling climate, weather, and their environmental and economic effects), encryption (classical and quantum), mathematical biology (mathematical evolutionary genetics), and cognition (computational, of individuals and groups). The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong, independent research program, which incorporates synergistic collaborations both within the department and across the University. The hire is also expected to be an enthusiastic teacher and mentor, fulfilling the department’s key service function within the University community, and supporting the Department’s own undergraduate and graduate programs. This position is part of a cluster of new faculty lines at the University of Rochester in Biology, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics, supported by the Simons Foundation
