The Department of Pathology is currently seeking a Research Associate 2 to work in Miami, FL. The Research Associate 2 supports research activities under the direction of a principle investigator, program director or designee of the principle investigator or program director.

Core Job Functions

  • Performs specialized and complex experiments/studies.
  • Participates in the publication of significant research results.
  • Advances expertise through education, training, and research.
  • Writes extramural grants/proposals to gain support when appropriate.
  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens and tissue cultures.
  • Weighs and anesthetizes laboratory animals for experiments.
  • Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment.
  • Performs calculations to complete research test results.
  • Performs photography and dark room processing.
  • Participates in training sessions and workshops.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

The Research Associate 2 will report to Dr. David Lombard, Vice- Chair for Translational and Clinical Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. RA2 must be detail-oriented and with hands-on expertise in Mass Spectrometry (MS) to support Dr. Lombard’s laboratory analytical and research operations. The RA2 will be responsible for preparing samples, operating and maintaining mass spectrometry instruments, and analyzing data to support scientific investigations and quality control processes.

Key Functions:

  • Prepare and process biological, chemical, or environmental samples for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Operate and maintain LC-MS/MS.
  • Perform routine instrument calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Analyze and interpret mass spectrometry data using specialized software.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, including sample logs and analytical reports. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers to support experimental design and data interpretation. Assist in method development and validation for new assays.
  • As needed, work with others in the lab on non-MS-related projects, particularly to help complete projects for publication.
  • Present results at weekly group meetings.
  • Participate in lab maintenance tasks.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

1–3 years of hands-on experience with mass spectrometry techniques

Knowledge, Skills And Attitudes:

  • Familiarity with chromatography systems (e.g., HPLC, GC) is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Xcalibur, MassLynx, Analyst).
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
