We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Specialist to join our Technology Transaction and Investments team.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

This position sits in the BIS team, and we are the guardians of our customer’s data, knowing who they are, how they engage with us, and supporting the personalisation of their experience. 

We sat down with our Platform Manager, and they let us know the following about the role. 

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete? 

  • Helping our customers and Colleagues!!! 
  • Analyse our code and identify opportunities for improvement, 
  • Work on backlog items solving customer problems, 
  • Developing customer impacting changes, 
  • Mentoring and supporting junior staff. 

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year? 

Customer data migration and API adaptation is a core area we are focusing on with a side of anything to do with observability and empowering the business to self help. 

What is your management style? 

A mix of visionary and participative.  Setting a clear direction and inspires with a big picture while encouraging input and team decision-making. 

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity? 

Being part of a system that processes millions of transactions a day and is the backbone of the bank while being part of a transformation journey as we modernise our mainframe and integrate with a hybrid approach. 

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity? 

One of the biggest challenges in this role is also one of the most exciting.  The scale and history of our mainframe environment.  Decades of code and processes have built up to support the bank’s critical systems, which means you will often be diving into complex deeply interconnected applications.  It can feel like solving a puzzle, but it is also a rare opportunity to learn how large scale financial systems really work.  If you’re curious, enjoy untangling problems and want to build expertise that few people in the world possess, this challenge becomes one of the most rewarding parts of the job. 

What do we want you to know before you apply? 

What you will do matter because this is the banks foundation.  Customer master is the system of record for all customer data across the bank.  Everything else, accounts, lending, payments, digital channels, depends on the accuracy and resilience of what we do here. 

What will success look like for the candidate in this role? 

Success in this role means keeping our customer master data and supporting components accurate and resilient, that we know who our consumers are so we can work collaboratively within the team and contribute to the ongoing journey of modernising how customer information powers the bank. 

What is your favourite thing about working for BNZ? 

Other then the 6 weeks leave it is the investment in to resilience and great customer outcomes 

What technical skills / skills are REQUIRED for this role? 

Expert in Cobol with a wider understanding of other development languages including Java, JCL, CICS.

Growth mindset, keen desire to solve problems and understand the customer need.
