SUMMARY - PART TIME, WEEKENDS POSITION! ONE SHIFT PER WEEKEND!

The Microbiology Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to isolate, identify, and study microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Working under the supervision of senior laboratory staff, this role supports the diagnosis and treatment of infections and diseases through the accurate and timely analysis of clinical samples. The Microbiology Technologist prepares cultures, performs tests, maintains laboratory equipment, and ensures the integrity of all results.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES 

The responsibilities and duties described in this job description are intended to provide a general overview of the position. Duties may vary depending on the specific needs of the affiliate or location you are working at and/or state requirements. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Correctly identify microorganisms using macroscopic/microscopic morphology, bench biochemical/kits, and automated identification systems.
  • Successfully read microbiological cultures, including plate and broth cultures.
  • Efficiently set up urine and rectal cultures on/in correct media types for testing ordered.
  • Meticulously setup susceptibility testing for positive cultures, both MIC and Kirby-Bauer.
  • Apply biological theory to observations and draw accurate conclusions based on biological data to finalize culture reports to ensure correct antibiotics are reported.
  • Proficient with precision implements.
  • Responsible for performing quality control on all media and instrumentation.
  • Responsible for performing routine maintenance requirements.
  • Responsible for ordering, unpacking, and keeping inventory of supplies.
  • Demonstrates a professional attitude with honesty, ethics, and compassion, taking responsibility for actions and being transparent about errors or uncertainty.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.
  • Employees shall adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and will comply with and assist in complying with all applicable laws and regulations. This will include and not be limited to following the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and all Solaris Health and Affiliated Practice policies and procedures; maintaining the confidentiality of patients' protected health information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); immediately reporting any suspected concerns and/or violations to a supervisor and/or the Compliance Department; and the timely completion the Annual Compliance Training.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification and/or (NCA) National Credential Agency certification in Clinical Laboratory Science AND/OR Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university with course work that meets CLIA 88 requirements.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with team members, maintaining a srong commitment to teamwork and patient care.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
  • Ability to multi task.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing environments, functioning effectively and ensuring safety while working with infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological techniques and laboratory processes.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university required.
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification and/or (NCA) National Credential Agency certification in Clinical Laboratory Science AND/OR Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university with course work that meets CLIA 88 requirements.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 1 year experience required; 3 years of experience preferred.
