The Opportunity:

Avantor is seeking a General Manager for the Manati, PR site. The incumbent is responsible for driving growth and profitability by managing and overseeing all aspects of Puerto Rico business (Sales, Customer Service, Operations, Quality Assurance, Finance, Pricing, Services, etc.). Responsibilities include establishing strategic direction, planning and management of all local operations as well as working closely with the Avantor corporate support functions.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, chemistry, business administration, engineering or related field
  • 8+ years’ experience in a leadership role in the pharmaceutical, manufacturing. medical device or similar industry
  • MBA from a top tier program is a plus
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish a must
  • Knowledge in GMP, FDA, GLP and ISO regulations, preferable
  • Ability to work in a results-oriented, project-driven, real-time team environment, prioritize projects and deliver quality results within tight time constraints
  • Strong quantitative and technical / computer skills with significant experience in modeling and analysis
  • Successful track record in leading profitable business growth with a P&L responsibility, ideally in Distribution
  • Experienced in integrating business acquisitions
  • Ability to develop highly effective relationships with associates, customers, vendors and senior leadership
  • Knowledge in GMP, FDA, GLP and ISO regulations, preferable
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills – verbal, written and presentation; comfortable with interaction with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple initiatives at the same time
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative skills
  • Proficiency in computers (Microsoft office, lotus or similar)
  • Experience Supervising Personnel

How You Will Thrive

  • Responsible for overall profitability of Puerto Rican business. 
  • Oversees all activities related to sales and technical services businesses.
  • Plan, forecast and implement annual Internal Operating Plan (IOP) including capital requirements plan, direct and coordinate financial and budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments and increase efficiency.
  • Develop long term strategic plan and tactical short term activities in order to attain the financial goals and business objectives.
  • Review financial statements, sales & activity reports and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement; revise plans in accordance with current conditions.
  • Establish and implement departments with policies, goals, objectives and procedures as per corporate guidelines or country requirements to ensure continuing operations, maximize efficiency and increase productivity.
  • With department directors, determine staffing requirements, talent management and succession planning
  • Facilitate performance management evaluation system ensuring defined objectives for all associates and measuring competencies and achievement of objectives.
  • Confer with SLT to plan business objectives, develop organizational policies to coordinate functions and operations between divisions and departments, and establish responsibilities and procedures for attaining objectives.
  • Coordinate with corporate support functions and staff members to discuss issues, facilitate activities, and resolve problems
  • Monitor competitive environment to identify business threats and opportunities and develop business plans to address them
  • Identify new and continuing business opportunities for the short and long term profitability of the businesses.
  • Negotiate or approve local contracts and agreements, when appropriate, with customers, suppliers, service providers, governmental entities or other organizational entities.
  • Plan and develop industrial, labor and public relations activities designed to improve VWR’s image and relations with customers, employees, stockholders and public.
