Job Description:

Department and Position purpose

EDFT is looking to recruit into its Regulatory and Political Affairs team.  This team is responsible for overseeing EDFT’s regulatory strategy across gas, power financial and environmental markets.  We also provide an in-house political risk monitoring service that helps the business better understand the impact and direction of political developments on EDFT and our markets.  

The team works very closely with EDFT’s commercial team ensuring our regulatory strategy is aligned to our business and to provide regulatory advice and briefings on a regular basis.  The team also takes responsibility for defining EDFT’s response to and managing implementation of new regulatory requirements which involves close coordination across the wider EDFT business to develop a deep understanding of our operational and support platform.

We have a very active role across the wider EDF regulatory network to coordinate advocacy activities and sharing of knowledge and information.  We also take a leading role in various trade associations helping to shape the direction of regulatory policy.  Our advocacy work also includes dealing directly with policymakers and regulators across the markets in which we are active. 

Individuals in the team take responsibility for managing overall policy areas and also for regulatory issues and relationships specific national markets in which we are active.  It is a role that brings significant exposure to senior management, the commercial team and our wider operational and support functions.  It is also a role that has a significant external exposure both in the wider EDF Group and in the EU regulatory policy environment.

Experience Required

  • We are looking for someone with at least 5 years’ experience of wholesale market regulation although someone with additional experience will also be considered.
  • You must have detailed understanding of the gas regulatory framework and market design in Europe as you will be our lead person on developing our gas regulatory and market design strategy 
  • This ideally has been gained in working in another energy trading company or a gas and oil major although we will consider applicants who can demonstrate a high degree of commercial awareness and understanding of traded energy markets
  • Your experience will have ideally involved exposure to the EU regulatory framework including an understanding of the EU institutions. 
  • Your main areas of responsibility in the team will depend on your skills and experience and how they fit with the rest of the team. Ideally you will have also have a good understanding of LNG markets and related infrastructure and the
  • You will also be expected to manage our regulatory issues in the national markets in which EDFT is active so knowledge of some or all of the French, UK, Benelux, German and Italian gas market regulatory framework would help    
  • An interest and knowledge of the geopolitical issues impacting energy markets - particularly the gas markets – will be a significant advantage

Technical requirements and Person specification

  • It is crucial you are a dynamic self-starter as you will be expected to drive forward your areas of responsibility. 
  • You must be a strong communicator as it is a key aspect of this role. 
  • You will need the ability to explain complex issues in a way that can be easily understood by a wide audience and that readily identifies key issues.  
  • You will be expected to represent EDFT in the EDF Group network and externally in industry forums and in building an effective network of influence with policymakers and regulators.
  • You will take full responsibility for leading our regulatory strategy in relevant national markets and also at an EU level for sectoral regulation (e.g. on the EU ETS)
  • You will assist in providing guidance and coaching to junior members of the team contributing your expertise to their development
  • You will need to develop a strong understanding of our operational and commercial platform building credibility with internal stakeholders by providing expert advice
  • You will need to work proactively in the team to identify areas for continual improvement and take leadership for delivering change
  • You will be expected to build credibility with the senior executive team over time by providing briefings and giving presentations to them
  • As you will have responsibility for managing our regulatory work for specific national markets; language skills are an advantage.  Ideally you will be able to speak some or all of French, German, Italian, Spanish, but all language skills are an advantage. 
  • If you have knowledge of the UK regulatory framework that will also help.
  • Educated to at least degree level.  The discipline is not particularly important but demonstrating a logical mind and an interest in markets and how they work is.
