The Department of Environmental Services (DES) has vacancies for experienced Motorized Vehicle Operators (MVO) III and IV in the Operations Section of the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB). Employees will be required to operate and drive multiple different pieces of equipment and vehicles to include but not limited to the following:

  • Tractor-trailer in a landfill environment (MVO IV only);
  • Rubber tire loader in the Earth Products Recycling Yard;
  • Knuckle-boom truck for collection of brush material;
  • Hook lift roll off truck, street sweeping and vacuum leaf collection vehicles, and Pick-up trucks towing a 6–12 foot trailer;
  • Small to medium sized dump trucks for delivering mulch;
  • Rear-loading refuse collection trucks for litter and other programs supported by the Solid Waste Bureau; and
  • Stationary heavy equipment such as Tub Grinder, Rock crusher, Dirt shaker, or a Trommel screen.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs on equipment;
  • Assisting with leaf collection program, snow removal operations, special event services, and collection of trash and recyclables;
  • Performing inspections and maintaining the cleanliness of the trucks and equipment within the Solid Waste Bureau;
  • Providing information to citizens of the County regarding services provided such as brush collection, and interacting with other staff from various departments;
  • Utilizing a computer and/or tablet to enter data on a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or similar software system to document daily work completed, pre and post trip inspections, mileage; and other relevant information; and
  • Reading and following a map and using a GPS to perform daily functions.

The ideal candidates must have a high regard for safety as an operator of heavy automotive or related equipment. All applicable federal, state and County safety requirements must be followed. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential to effectively interact with customers and team members.

Minimum Requirements

Motorized Vehicle Operator Iii:

  • Two years of experience operating heavy automotive or related equipment such as street sweepers, knuckle boom truck and/or roll-off truck; and
  • Must possess a Class B or A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Motorized Vehicle Operator Iv:

  • Considerable experience operating heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles of significant magnitude and complexity;
  • Must possess a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License; AND
  • Alternatively, applicant may possess a combination of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's license and a Class "A" CDL Learner's permit at time of interview but must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with more than two years' experience operating vehicles of significant magnitude and complexity, plus experience in one or more of the following:

  • Operating refuse collection equipment and dump trucks, street sweepers, knuckle boom trucks and/or roll-off trucks;
  • Towing a 6-12 foot trailer with a pick-up truck;
  • Using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS);
  • Performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs on automotive equipment; and/or
  • Possession of valid CDL Hazmat and/or Tanker endorsements preferred.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment background check will be conducted.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.  

For both positions (MVO III, and MVO IV):

  • Applicant must possess a class "B" (or "A") Commercial Driver's License at time of application. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record.  

Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record, passing of the DOT physical and pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.

Once hired, the employee will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment as required by federal, state, and local standards and regulations.

Work is generally performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions and often near and around moving traffic. The work environment includes exposure to draft, noise, dust, grease, dirt and requires the ability to perform repetitive and intensive manual labor and to lift light-to-heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Additional information ONLY for MVO IV:

  • Applicant must possess a class "A" Commercial Driver's License at time of application.
  • Alternatively, applicant may possess a combination of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's license and a Class "A" CDL Learner's permit but must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date.

Additional Information

Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employees must be available for call-back and/or to respond to emergency debris calls and other emergency situations. Employees will be required to work overtime as needed and may also be required to work some holidays and Saturdays.

Salary Range Information:

  • Motorized Vehicle Operator III: $53,123.20 - $81,099.20 Annually
  • Motorized Vehicle Operator IV: $58,177.60 - $88,816.00 Annually
