Job Summary:
Provides nursing care to surgical patients in the immediate preoperative and postoperative period. Receives report from anesthesiologist, surgeon and/or circulating RN regarding surgical intervention and incorporates this into nursing plan of care. Assures control of pain, bleeding and nausea, proper positioning, management of airway, and stablilization of vital signs. Responds immediately to emergency situations. This position is represented by CNA.
Job Requirements:
Education And Work Experience:
- Associate Degree(A.S.) or equivalent: Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing: Preferred
- One year PACU or critical care experience: Required
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current RN license in state of practice: Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support): Required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS OR HS-PALS OR RQIPALS) certification: Required
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC): Required within 1 year of hire or transfer into the department.(Current employees as of 06.30.2021 have 2 years to complete)
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice: Required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Healthstream Advanced Cardiac Life Support (HS-ACLS) or RQIACLS: Required
Essential Functions:
- Is competent to perform physical assessment of patients post anesthesia - general, spinal, regional, or IV sedation. Is competent to manage the airway of a patient following anesthesia. Recognizes the symptoms of cardiac or respiratory distress and other impending emergencies 100% of the time. Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. Is competent in all routine nursing skills including: (1) medication administration, (2) intravenous therapy including blood products, (3) care & maintenance of indwelling catheters & drains and, (4) safe use of any medical equipment used in the critical care setting, (5) Understands and follows chain of command per policy.
- Is competent to monitor hemodynamic status of post-surgical patients. Accurately interprets ECG rhythm and manages care of patients during life threatening emergencies in populations served. Demonstrates knowledge of lead functions and application, able to make recommendations for best monitoring based on patient presentation.
- Is competent to manage pain control requirements of post surgical patients without airway compromise. Demonstrates understanding of pharmacological interactions and physiologic effects of anesthesia and narcotic analgesics. Is competent to determine safe patient discharge from the recovery room using established PACU discharge standards.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of restraints per Hospital policy. Is competent to access facility information systems to retrieve and utilize pertinent information for the provision of patient care or in the performance of other job related responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to safely and appropriately fulfill job specific responsibilities related to patient safety, security, emergency preparedness, emergent patient situations, control of hazardous materials/waste, life safety, medical equipment and utility systems as outlined in the Hospital’s environment of care plan. Maintains professional and technical knowledge and skills. Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve services and unit operation.
