About Us

At Basis, we’re not just building a company — we’re building the future. We’re redesigning the electrical systems that power our homes to fight climate change, reduce household costs, and create a better future for generations to come. That means rethinking everything, not just what we build, but how we build it.

To do this, we need incredible people. People who are bold, creative, sharp, and thoughtful. People who care. People who move fast and think differently. That’s where you come in.

The Role

This role exists to drive the electronics design and development of our next generation smart panel platform. Based in Auckland to support close collaboration with our hardware team, you’ll play a key part in shaping the panel’s core electronics - from early design decisions through to hands-on testing of prototypes. As an Intermediate or Senior Engineer, you’ll bring both technical depth and initiative, helping the team make critical trade-offs and move the project forward with confidence.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Architect and lead the development of the core electronic systems that power our smart panel platform, driving functionality, communication, and connectivity.
  • Design and validate high-performance power electronics for both mains-powered and extra low voltage (ELV) applications, ensuring optimal efficiency and safety.
  • Champion the seamless integration of our hardware with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), defining the electronic solutions that enable next-generation energy management.
  • Take full ownership of the electronics lifecycle, from initial specification and circuit design through to successful mass production.
  • Act as a key technical authority, guiding design decisions and elevating the team’s capabilities in modern electronics development
  • Partner with mechanical engineers, embedded software developers, and manufacturing teams to bring designs from prototype to production.
  • Translate system architecture into detailed circuit and PCB designs for core components, including high-density power supplies, digital control logic, and communication interfaces.
  • Execute rigorous circuit simulation (e.g., SPICE), tolerance analysis, and comprehensive validation testing to guarantee design robustness and performance under all operating conditions.
  • Integrate international safety and EMC standards (UL, IEC, CE) into the design process from the ground up, ensuring a clear and efficient path to product certification.
  • Be involved in prototyping, testing and continuous improvement initiatives including failure analysis, debugging, and relevant documentation.

If you are a seasoned expert in electronics design who excels at transforming complex challenges into elegant, robust, and manufacturable products, this is your opportunity to make a significant impact on our industry-leading portfolio. The ideal candidate is a methodical problem-solver, adept at systems-level thinking, and skilled at collaborating across engineering disciplines to deliver exceptional solutions.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:

  • Proven track record in electronics engineering and product development (typically 6+ years), with a strong background in taking products from concept to market.
  • Demonstrated expertise in power electronics, including the design and development of both mains-powered systems (e.g., AC/DC converters, power supplies) and high-efficiency, low-voltage DC systems.
  • Mastery of analog and digital circuit design, from schematic capture and component selection through to simulation (e.g., SPICE), PCB layout, and validation testing.
  • Deep familiarity with best practices in Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), and experience working within a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) framework or similar quality systems.
  • A strong understanding of power system applications, such as power conversion, system protection, and energy management.
  • Proficient in a lab environment with hands-on experience in prototype bring-up, debugging, root cause analysis, and using standard test equipment.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, collaborating closely with mechanical engineers, embedded software developers, and manufacturing partners to achieve project goals.
  • Solid understanding of safety, compliance, and reliability standards (e.g., UL, IEC, CE) and the process of designing products to meet them.
  • A methodical and data-driven approach to tackling complex, multi-dimensional engineering problems and delivering high-quality, scalable solutions.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Some nice to haves include:

  • Previous experience working in a start-up/scale-up or similar fast-paced, highly autonomous environment
  • Exposure to firmware-hardware co-design and integration.
  • Experience with IoT, connected devices, or smart control systems.
  • Familiarity with sensor integration.
  • High speed PCB layout experience for DDR

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP)
  • A hybrid work culture with a mixture of office days for collaborating with your team, and work from home days for deep focus
  • Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise
  • Tools of trade, including laptop and headphone allowance
  • Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments
  • A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (Lego Battlebots, table tennis, themed Friday drinks, and more!)
  • Office dogs + steady supply of fresh fruit and snacks in the office
  • Access to Clearhead, our well-being programme which gives you 5x free sessions with a psychologist per year
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion: Pride Committee and partnering with Pride Pledge, DEIB Committee, EEO Policy and well-being strategy!
  • Parental leave policy that tops up wages to 100% for the primary caregiver for up to 22 weeks and up to 6 weeks for secondary caregivers (conditions apply)
  • The opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly autonomous, and high performing team.
