We Make Life More Rewarding and Dignified
Location: Libertyville
Department: Information Technology
Join our team as an Applied AI Intern, driving real-world AI solutions and education initiatives. In this role based in Libertyville, IL, you will contribute to ongoing AI projects and conduct targeted research to advance our organization’s AI capabilities. A major focus will be on enhancing AI literacy across the company – helping colleagues understand and leverage tools like Microsoft Copilot – while also developing AI-driven applications (such as custom AI agents and chatbots) that improve business processes. You’ll work closely with our AI and IT specialists to apply cutting-edge techniques in generative AI and automation, becoming an integral part of projects like the development of internal Copilot agents in collaboration with Microsoft and company-wide AI training programs.
This role is open to talented undergraduate and master’s candidates eager to apply their skills in a dynamic corporate setting.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to AI Development: Work on the design, development, and testing of generative AI solutions. This includes helping build internal AI agents (e.g. chatbots or Copilot-based assistants) that address specific business use cases.
- Integrate Microsoft Copilot: Assist in integrating Microsoft 365 Copilot features into team workflows and applications. For example, you may help configure Copilot in tools like Excel or Teams to automate tasks and improve productivity.
- Support AI Literacy Initiatives: Create training materials, tutorials, and hands-on demo sessions to educate colleagues about AI tools and practices. You’ll play a key role in our internal AI enablement campaigns (such as department-focused “AI Literacy” sessions).
- Research & Prototyping: Conduct exploratory research on emerging AI technologies (libraries, models, APIs) and prototype simple applications to evaluate their potential value. You might analyze new capabilities from the latest GPT models or test a new AI service, and share findings with the team.
- Data Preparation and Analysis: Assist with preparing datasets, writing prompts, or tuning models for AI projects. Ensure data quality and experiment with model parameters or prompt engineering to improve AI agent performance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams (IT, business units, etc.) to identify pain points that AI could solve. Gather requirements from stakeholders and help implement AI-driven improvements in their workflows, under guidance from senior team members.
- Documentation & Presentation: Document your project work and learnings. Prepare summary reports or presentations to update stakeholders on project progress. By the end of the internship, present your AI project outcomes and share recommendations for further AI adoption within the organization.
Requirements:
- Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field. Academic standing in good favor; expected graduation after summer 2026 or 2027 (for undergraduates) or in a relevant master’s program.
- AI/ML Knowledge: Foundational understanding of machine learning and AI concepts. Completion of coursework or projects in areas like algorithms, data mining, machine learning, or artificial intelligence. Enthusiasm for generative AI and LLMs – you stay curious about tools like ChatGPT or Copilot and how they work.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used in AI, preferably Python (knowledge of R or Java is also acceptable). Ability to write clean, efficient code and use libraries for data analysis or machine learning (pandas, scikit-learn, etc.).
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical thinking to break down problems and an innovative mindset to devise AI-driven solutions. Comfortable working with data (data analysis, basic statistics) to support model development and evaluation.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms for non-technical audiences is crucial (given the AI literacy aspect of the role). Collaborative attitude and willingness to learn from and educate others in a team environment.
Preferred Skills (Bonus):
- Experience with AI Tools: Hands-on experience with AI and automation tools such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, or ChatGPT. For instance, familiarity with how Copilot can assist in coding or content generation, or experience building a simple chatbot or using an AI API in a project.
- ML Frameworks & Cloud: Exposure to machine learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch) or NLP libraries. Experience with cloud AI services (especially Microsoft Azure AI/OpenAI, or AWS/GCP AI services) for deploying models or using pre-built AI capabilities is a plus.
- Project Experience: Previous internship, research project, or substantial coursework project in the AI/ML domain. Demonstrated ability to iterate on an idea from concept to prototype. Any experience with data visualization or BI tools to present insights is a bonus.
- AI Best Practices: Knowledge of AI ethics, data privacy considerations, or model governance principles. Understanding the importance of responsible AI use in a corporate setting (e.g., avoiding bias in models, data security) will be appreciated.
- Self-Starter: Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and take initiative in a fast-moving environment. A passion for continuous learning in the AI space – staying updated with the latest trends and eager to try out new tools or approaches.
