Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Trainee

Location: Good Samaritan Hospital at 375 Dixmyth Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45220

Work Hours:

• Full-time, 80 hours bi-weekly
• Evening shift
• Weekend and holiday rotation

Job Requirements:

• High School Degree or GED
• New hires must register and be active with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee prior to the start date, OR have an active Registered Pharmacy Technician registration
• Applicants must complete an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or begin a Pharmacy Technician Trainee program within 6 months of hire and complete the program no greater than 18 months of initial registration date.
   

Job Overview:

A Hospital Pharmacy Technician - Qualified is a healthcare professional who plays an integral role in pharmacy operations. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician assists in the distribution of medications to patients across inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, and operating room units. Responsibilities include selecting, counting, compounding, packing, labeling, and delivering medications. Proficiency in accessing and viewing electronic health records and utilizing pharmacy automated systems is required. Pharmacy technicians will work in multiple areas of the pharmacy to maintain competency and broaden their skill set. Applicants must complete an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or begin a Pharmacy Technician Trainee program within 6 months of hire and complete the program within 18 months of initial registration.

Job Responsibilities:

• Assists and trains with the pharmacist in non-sterile medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, packaging, scanning, labeling, filling, and delivering medications per department guidelines. Unit Dose: selects the appropriate medications and accurately labels the medications. Non-sterile compounding:  weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients by using proper calculations, equipment, and technique. Automated Dispensing Machines:  able to sign in, load/refill/unload, outdate, and resolve discrepancies. Stock Orders/Emergency Carts/Boxes accurately fills in a timely manner. Accurately and efficiently transports medications from the pharmacy to areas outside of the pharmacy (tubing, cart delivery, IV Run, STAT, etc.).   Medications are delivered at the correct run time, delivered to the correct area, and stored appropriately (refrigerator/room temperature, secured).  
• Responsible for inventory control through stock rotation, removal of expired medications, reordering/stocking of medications/supplies when stock is low, and packaging/assembling medications for future dispensing. Ensures safe storage of medications. 
  Responsible for maintaining an accurate controlled substances (CII-CV) inventory and for reviewing and maintaining controlled substance records. Immediately reports unresolved controlled discrepancies to a supervisor.
• Optimizes workflow by efficiently and accurately completing job duties and prioritizing workload. Has a good overall job knowledge and uses good technical and procedural judgment. Assists with other duties as necessary for efficient pharmacy operations. Shows initiative and flexibility in carrying out day to day tasks. Utilizes appropriate and logical problem solving techniques. Identifies critical issues and communicates to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. 
• Appropriately uses pharmacy technology. Follows department standards of work, policies, and workflows. Maintains the pharmacy automation (changing consumables, cleaning, etc). Identifies, troubleshoots, and reports pharmacy automation issues. Accesses patient information, processes in-basket Rx Messages, and prints labels in the Electronic Health Record.
• Responds politely and professionally to pharmacist/nursing/physician/patient or other requests via telephone, in writing, or in person. Appropriately manages, triages, and ensures timely follow-up of all requests. Assists in the training of new employees.
