TxDOT's Austin District is looking for a Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III (General Transportation Tech) based out of our maintenance office in Georgetown, TX. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5,000 if you have a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-month of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. This position is for ONE Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Salary Plan/Grade:
- Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech I: A16 ($40,918.00 - $61,130.00/yearly)
- Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech II: A17 ($42,976.00 - $64,469.00/yearly)
- Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech III: A18 ($45,521.00 - $71,055.00/yearly)

Position Description
This position performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for the Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III Include (General Transportation Tech):
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional duties for Roadway Maintenance Tech II (General Transportation Tech):
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMIAdditional duties for Roadway Maintenance Tech III (General Transportation Tech):
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
Trains Other Employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: No education required.
Experience:
- Roadway Maintenance Tech I (GTT I) = No experience required;
- Roadway Maintenance Tech II (GTT II) = 1 year experience*;
- Roadway Maintenance Tech III (GTT III) = 2 years experience*
*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
Licenses And Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 365 calendar days from date of employment.

Additional Competencies for a Roadway Maintenance II (GTT):
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Additional Competencies for a Roadway Maintenance III (GTT):
- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
- Plan review methods, processes and procedures
- Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
- Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:
- Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise and vibration
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
- Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
