The North West Regional Organised Crime Unit is a collaborative multi agency covert response to tackle serious and organised crime across the North West Region.

The NWROCU is responsible for identifying, disrupting and dismantling serious and organised criminals causing the most significant harm across the NW by providing specialist and operational support, research and direction on strategic, tactical and emerging issues. The NWROCU facilitates Regional Coordination and Tasking, which then informs and influences decisions allowing the effective deployment of resources. The promotion of collaborative working with key partner agencies and interoperability is necessary to achieve this and a 4Ps focus is key to NWROCU’s performance.

Applications are invited from substantive Sergeants and with previous experience as a competent and professional investigator.

The purpose of this role is to gather, develop, analyse and disseminate intelligence using sensitive sources and technology to support the proactive targeting of criminals and criminal organisations.

Working collaboratively with the National Crime Agency, NWROCU Sensitive Intelligence Unit, Covert Investigations Teams, other intelligence departments and broader Law Enforcement partners, Targeted Intercept helps deliver an effective response to lead the UK's response to tacking Serious and Organised Crime. 

Targeted Intercept (TI) operates at the very front end of the covert collection of criminal communications, operating within the Investigatory Powers Act 2016.

This is a dynamic and diverse arena within a complex and rapidly evolving operational environment. Fundamentally, the role is to get the right information at the right time to the right person, to make the best decision.

The role involves operational delivery to tackle serious organised crime and mitigate risk in a challenging environment.

The ideal candidate will have high levels personal responsibility and inter-personal skills and be able to develop and maintain effective relationships.

Furthermore they will be able to identify and disseminate relevant intelligence to support operational decision making, and make time critical, dynamic decisions and risk assessments in response to immediate events. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), and Data Protection, although no specific experience or policing background is required as full training is provided. 

The NWROCU leads the policing response across the region posed by serious and organised crime in Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and North Wales. The NWROCU provides the vital link from national capabilities and expertise to local policing and knowledge, enabling the North West region to deliver the Government’s Serious and Organised Crime strategy and to protect communities from harm.

The post is subject to an initial secondment of two years reviewable based on continuous funding and performance.

Further developments in NWROCU’s capabilities are anticipated in the future.

The post is subject to continuous funding and performance. The post is created to support the transfer of business from the North West Forces to NWROCU and was agreed by COG.  It is separate from other secondment opportunities and will be supported by your Force.

Successful applicants working within NWROCU will be subject to MV (Management Vetting), enhanced SC Vetting and NCA Vetting prior to taking up post.  

This is a full time role working a shift pattern – the core hours covered will be 0600 – 2200hrs including weekend working.

In cases where the commute to work is in excess of applicant’s current commute the excess travel will be paid.
