Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
As the Applications Manager, you will be responsible for defining and implementing a strategic and value-driven approach to rationalise, consolidate, and optimise the enterprise application landscape in alignment with corporate and IM strategies.
Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Develop and maintain an Application Rationalisation Strategy and multi-year Applications Roadmap aligned with IM and business priorities
- Review and consolidate applications across the group to reduce duplication, functional overlap, and overall application footprint
- Evaluate the cost, usage, and value contribution of applications to guide decommissioning or consolidation decisions
- Ensure the application roadmap is financially viable and considers industry trends, business requirements, and transformation initiatives
- Identify opportunities to commercialise application services internally and externally and support associated business models
- Drive digital transformation by leveraging emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency, enhance decision-making, and future-proof business capabilities
- Identify digital trends and transformation opportunities through continuous market analysis.
- Recommend and support the implementation of solutions leveraging AI, ML, automation, and IoT technologies
- Collaborate with stakeholders to re-engineer or digitise business processes for better customer experience, cost reduction, or risk mitigation
- Ensure effective information management governance and alignment between application strategies and business objectives
- Lead and coordinate Business Review Meetings within the IM governance framework to track strategic delivery and performance
- Provide technical and strategic support to governance forums such as the Architecture Review Committee, Change Control Committee, and Security Oversight Committee
- Oversee the full lifecycle of applications, ensuring delivery excellence, business enablement, and governance compliance
- Manage the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of applications through structured SDLC and change control frameworks
- Assess and enhance the relevance and performance of applications to ensure they continue to meet business needs
- Manage vendor relationships and application budgets to optimise cost-effectiveness and contractual compliance
- Ensure that application delivery and usage conform to internal control, risk, and regulatory requirements, including data privacy
- Strengthen relationships with internal and external stakeholders to drive shared understanding, value delivery, and solution adoption
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in information management or related field (NQF Level 7)
- Post graduate qualification in Information Management or related discipline (NQF Level 8 / 9) would be advantageous
Experience
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in Information Management or related disciplines
- Proven experience in the management of a complex applications environment
- Proven experience in managing multiple outsourced/external service providers
Additional Information
- Proficient knowledge of mining and other relevant legislation applicable to Thungela Resources and the Information Management environment.
- Advanced understanding of applications lifecycle management
- Advanced understanding of the management of interfaces and integrations
- Proficient knowledge of financial management and resource management within the IM environment
- Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Application processes
- Proficient knowledge of stakeholder management
- Proficient understanding of ISO 27000; COBIT 5 and ITIL
- Knowledge of the relevant South African environmental legislation including the Mine Health and safety Act
- Sound Knowledge of subscribed Environmental Management standards and ISI 14001
- An in-depth knowledge of subscribed Environmental Management standards and ISO 14001
- Good knowledge of Safety and sustainable development policies, procedures
- Sound knowledge of the mining industry
- Understanding of latest trends and practices within the environmental industry
- Understanding of Water Management Practices
