What You’ll Do

Responsibilities may vary depending on the specific position assigned to but they may include:

Process/Project Development Engineering

  • Perform unit tests and analyze operating data to improve profitability
  • Assist process engineers with designs of less complex equipment such as piping, pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, etc.
  • Provide operating data for planning, operations improvement, economic evaluations, etc.
  • Assist process engineers with troubleshooting to determine causes and solutions to operating problems
  • Maintain and develop key performance indicators (KPIs) for the process units

Process Controls Engineering

  • Assist with the upgrade of Controls computers onsite
  • Assist Functional and Area Business Team Controls Engineers with Maintenance and Project day-to-day support
  • Provide DCS control scheme designs, control configurations, alarm configurations and operator graphics that meet LRC guidelines and provide improved reliability/safety for future plant operations
  • Participate in project development including cost estimation, P&ID development and control scheme development
  • Participate in MOC, Hazop, LOPA, and Alarm Rationalization processes
  • Identify and participate in design of any DCS infrastructure modifications or additions required to support projects
  • Participate in project FAT, SAT, commissioning, and start-up activities
  • Assist with Operator training documentation
  • Assist in data collection using DCS System historian
  • Assist in Alarm Rationalization and use alarm reduction techniques to drive alarm KPI’s
  • Assist with installation and upkeep of DCS Controls Network Hardware and Software

Environmental Engineering

  • Perform air and water emissions modeling and calculations
  • Develop emissions projections to support potential changes in refinery production levels
  • Recommend process changes to reduce/minimize emissions
  • Assist with data collection, tracking, and analysis for various regulatory programs to determine environmental compliance
  • Lead periodic sample collection in the field to measure process compliance
  • Aid program owners in regulatory report preparation for state and federal agencies (including air, water, and waste)
  • Participate in Environmental testing and audits, including air pollutant RATAs, furnace tuning, third party audits, and pond sampling
  • Communicate effectively with process and operation groups to gather and relay compliance statuses
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and safety teams on environmental best practices
  • Contribute to internal training, awareness campaigns, and compliance initiatives

Operations

  • Assist with daily process monitoring
  • Support troubleshooting efforts relating to unit upsets, product quality incidents, not meeting production plans, etc.
  • Work with various departments within the refinery to help support operations
  • Assist with area compliance with EH&S
  • Assist with compilation of production data

Lab

  • Update equipment spreadsheets
  • Setup SQC for various instruments following EPA protocols
  • Aid in developing methods on GC or GC/MS
  • Assist Coordination & Economics Team as appropriate

Deployed Process Safety Engineering

  • Perform daily safety procedure audits and inspections as needed
  • Assist in the delivery of the Contractor Safety Training
  • Support PSM including PSI; PHA; MOC; auditing; Drawing Updates, MOC Doc, T/A Help
  • Assist with the development of HMIS signs and labeling
  • Perform the annual respiratory protection program audit for the Safety Department
  • Engage with field personnel to understand operational challenges, provide support, and reinforce a strong safety culture
  • Foster positive and constructive interactions with field personnel to encourage reporting of safety concerns and ensure effective communication
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Who You Are

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. full-time for the duration of your work term and able to produce documentation upon application (e.g., work visa).
  • Available to begin work in either January 2026 or May 2026.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Solid analytical and Microsoft Suite skills, specifically Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal, judgement, and decision-making skills.

Education

  • Must be enrolled in a Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related Engineering degree at an accredited post-secondary institution at the time of intended work term and returning to full-time studies after the work term OR registered in an accredited post-secondary co-op or internship program for the duration of the work term.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in either a Masters or Ph.D. program at an accredited post-secondary institution may also be considered.
  • New graduates are not eligible for student opportunities.

Working Conditions

  • May include frequency of travel, sitting, standing, computer work, lifting, driving, working at site, etc. 

Safety Sensitive

  • This may be a safety-sensitive role, and you will also be required to wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during required work hours. Furthermore, you will also be required to pass the pre-employment medical and drug/alcohol assessment requirements. 
  • Safety sensitive positions require the operation of a motor vehicle, applicants are asked to provide a recent (i.e., issued within the previous 4 weeks) original driver’s abstract, for the preceding 5-year period, if offered the position. A valid Canadian class 5 Driver's License with no restrictions (i.e., non GDL) is a requirement for this role
