We are currently looking for a part-time Lab Assistant to work in the lab of Dr. Harmit Malik in the Basic Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. The Malik lab focuses on conducting evolutionary studies of genetic conflict to gain insight into their mechanisms and consequences. This role will help to support a research program focusing on the evolution of chromatin proteins in flies by performing various logistical and organizational tasks including media preparation, ordering, maintenance of lab stocks, and general lab upkeep and cleanliness. The position is ideally suited for someone who wants to gain exposure to working in an academic research lab environment, further strengthen their organizational, time management, and collaboration skills, and can commit to staying with the lab for at least 1 full year.
The Lab Assistant will coordinate with a senior member of the Malik lab team to work a regular 1-2 day/week work schedule (with some flexibility on specific work days) for a total of 8-12 hours/week. This role will be compensated at a rate of $20.76/hour.

What you’ll do:
Under the direction of a senior lab team member, assist with establishing a research program by performing various support duties, including:
Maintaining media stocks
Ordering scientific lab supplies
Maintaining equipment
General lab upkeep and cleanliness
Regularly participate in lab meetings and learn about the lab’s science
What you bring:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
Willingness to commit to working in the lab for at least 1 full year is required.
An interest in learning about various research projects in the Malik lab is desired.
Previous experience working in a lab environment would be a plus.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Superior organizational skills, prioritization skills, and time management skills.
Meticulous attention to detail with ability to maintain accurate records of experiments and procedures.
Proficient computer skills (PC and/or Mac, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Ability to work well as part of a team of scientists working at the interface of evolutionary, molecular, and genetics.
Ability to interact positively with all levels of staff.
Ability to work efficiently, be adaptable, and be self-motivated.
Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

$17.53 (minimum) - $21.88 (midpoint) - $28.47 (maximum)Pay Type:

HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
