Background
The rapid development of large language models (LLMs) has made it possible to imagine new forms of interaction with complex data platforms. Instead of relying on technical query languages or specialized dashboards, users could simply ask questions in natural language and receive meaningful answers. This could lower the barrier for data-driven decision-making and make advanced analytics more widely accessible.
This thesis will explore such a system, consisting of three main components:
- an LLM that interprets user questions,
- a user interface that enables intuitive interaction, and
- a set of MCP servers and tools that the LLM can use to query and analyze data.
The current prototype already demonstrates this workflow, but its performance, reliability, and user experience are limited.
Goal
The aim of the project is not set in stone, but some example directions could be:
- How to test LLMs in realistic system settings.
- How to measure improvements when upgrading models, tools, or prompts.
- How to gain user trust through transparency, usability, or explainability.
- How to ensure security and prevent data leakage when deploying LLM-based systems.
The research will likely involve developing or refining a prototype, experimenting with different system configurations, and designing ways to evaluate the system’s performance and reliability. The precise focus can evolve depending on which challenges emerge as most significant, as well as the expertise and interests of the supervisors.
Ultimately, the thesis aims to contribute practical insights into how LLMs can be integrated into data platforms in a way that is user-friendly, secure, and trustworthy.
Ideally the project would be done during the first half of 2026 but the timeline is flexible.
