What you’ll do

Reporting to the AVP, Real Estate Design and Sustainability, the Manager of Design & Construction Standards will be a subject matter expert on all aspects of design and construction related to Proto-type design drawings, specifications and standards, and departmental standards, policies and procedures related to CTR, Petroleum, Part Source, and Party City. The Manager will manage and be responsible for all aspects related to the development and maintenance of an up-to-date list of pre-approved general contractors to execute on various capital projects. The Manager will manage and be responsible for the existing IRIS construction mgt. process and all requirements for the Design & Construction group including implementation of all Project Management requirements. The manager will play a key role in developing and implementing an updated set of construction management processes as we transition from IRIS to the Lucernex construction management cloud based solution in 2021 and early 2022.

The position requires a strong communicator with extensive hands-on experience in design, construction and project management.

  • Subject matter expert for all Prototype Design, Specifications and Standards, BIM Standards, Design and Construction for all Canadian Tire Retail, Party City, PartSource, Petroleum, Mark’s and SportChek stores.

  • Provide direction, guidance and support to the Standards and Proto Specialist who will be a direct report into this position

  • Coordinate and manage legal and safety requirements for contracts and agreements.

  • Manage process for all policy and procedures related to all formats, providing support to all project teams

  • Create and maintain design criteria/standards and specifications for all Corporate Buildings and Sites

  • Co-ordinate proto design process with the Manager of Sustainability and Innovation to ensure wherever possible that our proto designs support CTC’s sustainability goals

  • Travel to existing and new stores to assess product performance and review proto standards

  • Manage all master proto drawings & specs for Canadian Tire Retail, Party City, Petroleum, PartSource, Mark’s and SportChek stores. Provide pro-active leadership to the external and internal members of the proto team. Ensure timely issuance of Design Change Bulletins to document approved changes to standard Protype drawings, and specifications

  • BIM implementation and management. Develop, implement, and maintain BIM standards, protocols, and best practices. Oversee the creation, maintenance, and update of BIM models throughout the project lifecycle. Lead initiatives to improve efficiency, productivity, and innovation within the company’s BIM processes.

  • Provide training and support to project teams on BIM software (e.g., Revit, Navisworks) and workflows. Mentor junior staff in BIM methodologies and processes.

  • Maintain, develop relationships with consultants, vendors and suppliers and assist in researching new vendors, systems, techniques and equipment

  • Coordinate, issue and maintain all standard forms, policies and procedures for the department and CTREL

  • Provide full project support to all CTREL teams and departments

  • Assist project managers and teams with warranty, issues by leveraging relationships with National Account reps

  • Technical, procedural support to project teams

  • Participate in design development of new concepts with the AVP’s, PM’s, store planning and external consultants as is required

  • Responsible to maintain and update the Project Management Manual

  • Issue procedure bulletins

  • Develop, implement and monitor compliance for Design and Construction policies and procedures

  • As the IRIS subject matter expert and lead, establish, maintain and enhance standardized filing processes and procedures within IRIS and adjust as required during the transition from IRIS to the Lucernex project management  

  • Manage and expedite the GC pre-qualification process

  • A lead team member in the ongoing value engineering process for all retail banners, managing value engineering studies as required to review, assess and reduce the design and construction costs for the buildings

  • Manage and maintain all Corporate Signage standards for all business units and accountability, responsibility of the national Signage Program.

  • Management of OH&S and co-ordination support to Construction teams

  • Assist the project teams in the adaptation and implementation of our Corporate standards into non-standard projects such as expansion and renovations, new concept development (eg: Remarkable stores, smaller urban concept stores) or when site specific Municipal requirements conflict with our Corporate direction. This position acts as an interpreter between the strategic ideal and the practical reality of existing projects. This position will also support the teams in conflict resolution when standards or specifications are at issue

  • Be familiar with practices and cost effectiveness of the design of competitive retailers to ensure that the corporate standards are competitive

  • Quality Assurance to constantly review and monitor current methods and materials used in the design and construction of our stores, and to be aware of quality concerns and implement changes as required to ensure our stores operate without undue warranty or maintenance concerns

  • Research and development of new products, materials and systems to support new concept development, reduce construction costs and energy reduction methods

  • Special projects as assigned. Must be adaptable to handle unique and unusual requests for research and analysis

What you bring

  • Minimum 5 to 10 years’ experience in architecture, construction, design, sustainability, energy, electrical, mechanical and/or architectural fields with an extensive Design and Construction mgt. expertise.  

  • Proficiency in BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, etc.

  • Strong understanding of architectural design processes and construction methods.

  • Design and construction experience with large format retail stores.

  • Construction master specification writing experience would be an asset.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication skills

  • Excellent presentation and negotiation skills

  • Strong organization skills

  • Goal & results oriented

  • Excellent relationship building skills 

  • Complete understanding and experience of the construction/project mgt. process, systems, technologies, contracts, bid, tender, specifications, scheduling, and the delivery of numerous,  national and complex projects

  • Knowledge and understanding of building code legislation in all provinces.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team on large and small projects meeting set budgets and strict deadlines.

  • Complete project and CTREL team support, , regular site/construction store visits, meeting with external vendors and consultants as required

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.

  • Proficiency in CAD, Word, Excel, Access & Power Point.
