Job Description
Purpose of the role
To identify and conduct the appropriate analysis and due diligence on Sanctions alerts to ensure the appropriate action is taken against customers and payment activity as defined by the Sanctions Standards and Restricted Activity Matrix, ensuring that the organisation adheres to all applicable sanction’s laws and regulations and internal governance, such that client accounts are not held and transactions are not processed in breach of application laws and regulations.
Accountabilities
- Understanding the objectives of the Global Sanctions Function and the control frameworks and embed a culture of compliance with sanctions.
- Revision of escalated cases and confirm a True Match in line with regulations/policy accurately and in a timely manner, feeding back on instances of incorrect escalation.
- Management and provision of guidance in the completion of complex sanctions investigations, ensuring that matters are correctly managed and follow appropriate escalation routes, while involving the relevant stakeholders early and fully.
- Due diligence on Payment Screening alerts to determine the appropriate treatment and next steps for the payment in line with documented procedures following the defined governance process and approvals as required.
- Escalation of Customer Screening True Matches to appropriate Business Aligned Sanctions Team for assessment.
- Identification of opportunities to drive efficiencies in the alert management process and feed these back to the appropriate team(s) to implement.

Join us as a Senior Sanctions Manager within our Swiss Financial Crime team in Geneva.
The role holder reports into the Head of Financial Crime, Switzerland and provides subject matter expertise to key stakeholders with regards to on-going compliance with the Group Sanctions Policy.
The role holder will primarily support the overall management of sanctions risk for the Private Bank in Switzerland and Monaco but will also be required to provide support for other jurisdictions by providing guidance and input to critical or technically complex business initiatives, building strong partnerships with the business partners, supporting first line of defence operational areas in ensuring compliance with sanctions policy, monitoring (and managing where appropriate) controls associated with sanctions and promoting a culture of risk control across the business and Financial Crime.
What you will be doing:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the law and practice of Swiss, UK, EU, U.S and UN sanctions regimes, as well as financial industry implementation practices
- Provide accurate, timely and balanced advice on Swiss, UK, EU, U.S and UN sanctions requirements and Barclays Sanctions Policy to internal stakeholders
- Conduct in-depth investigations into complex account structures and/or transactions with a particular focus on financial crime and sanctions risk compliance
- Investigate customers and transactions screenings alerts that are escalated for second line review
- Oversee sanctions screening alerts workstream along with KPI reporting
- Maintain a detailed knowledge and understanding of the sanctions control framework and drives effective oversight over it by a variety of means, including review of management information
- Liaise with local regulators and other external stakeholders as needed
Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:
- Excellent understanding of SECO, OFAC, HMT, EU, UN and other jurisdictional sanctions laws, regulations, regulatory expectations and industry best practice
- Knowledge of Global Sanctions regimes and requirements and AML regulations
- Subject Matter Expert with respect to Group Sanctions Policy
- Subject Matter Expert with respect to Customer Screening and Payment Screening sanctions tools
- Strong leadership and operational management skills are essential to ensure that the team meets its challenging SLAs whilst at all times maintaining the quality of its decisioning and record keeping
Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:
- Higher academic degrees and professional qualifications in the fields of anti-money laundering and /or sanctions risk compliance
- An understanding of Private Bank and/or Wealth Management businesses
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and French
