Description

Assistant Professor of Biology – Immunology (tenure-track)
Colby College - Waterville, ME

The Department of Biology at Colby College is seeking an immunologist to fill an open, tenure-
track position at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2026. Candidates should have a
Ph.D. in the biological sciences with emphasis in molecular, cellular or developmental biology,
genetics or biochemistry. We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated expertise in
immunology, with a research program that addresses questions of fundamental immunology or
biomedical applications.

The successful candidate will teach 4.5 courses per year, with laboratories and discussion-based
seminar classes constituting a portion of that load. The teaching responsibilities will include
BI225 Immunology (with lab), BI325 Advanced Immunology (no lab), an additional course in the
candidate’s area of expertise, and rotation in our introductory course BI163 The Cellular Basis
of Life. We currently have an eco-immunologist among our faculty and seek candidates whose
research program will complement this and other existing departmental strengths. We
anticipate such complementary research may intersect with areas such as physiology, cell
biology, molecular or structural biology, neurobiology, endocrinology, or reproductive biology.
We also welcome applicants whose research engages topics of interest to students pursuing
pre-health professional pathways. A commitment to undergraduate education is expected, and
teaching experience is desirable. We are particularly interested in candidates who will
contribute to the access, opportunity, and excellence of the campus community through their
teaching, research, and mentorship.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an active research program that includes
supervision and mentoring of undergraduates. Our facilities can support invertebrate and fish
models and cell culture, but not mammals. Active affiliations with the Jackson Laboratory,
Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences provide
potential for collaborative research opportunities. An attractive startup package is available. A
candidate may be eligible for a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professorship, which includes
dedicated annual research funds and salaries for undergraduate research assistants
(https://hluce.org/our-grants/).
Please submit a cover letter (max 2 pages), curriculum vitae that includes contact information
for three referees, and graduate transcripts. In addition, candidates should submit a statement
describing research interests and plans appropriate for an undergraduate-only institution (max
3 pages), and a statement describing their teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and
practices in inclusive pedagogy (max 3 pages). All materials should be submitted to Interfolio at
http://apply.interfolio.com/TBD . Candidates are invited to include an optional paragraph (may
go over 2 page limit) in their cover letter describing how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected
their career trajectory. Review of applications will begin September 21, 2025, and the position
will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified.
