Project Title: Editing and Footnoting the Poetry of Richard Barnfield
Faculty Mentor: Nancy Simpson-Younger
Project Description: Richard Barnfield is a queer Elizabethan poet whose sonnets are in direct dialogue with Shakespeare's, Spenser's, and Sidney's, making him an important figure to teach and research in the undergraduate classroom. Still, there is no readily accessible footnoted version of the text. For our final class project in The Queer Renaissance, I asked students to begin footnoting and editing his poetry, in order to create a teaching edition that I could use in future classes and eventually publish online. During this CURI project, two students will take the materials begun during this class project and 1) standardize the document's approach to footnoting, spelling, and grammar (weeks 1-5); 2) add deeper footnotes to highlight the interconnections between Barnfield and Shakespeare/Spenser/Sidney (weeks 6-15); 3) format the document, updating the hyperlinks and potentially preparing it for online dissemination (early spring semester); 4) present individual research on Barnfield's sonnets at either the Sigma Tau Delta conference or another undergraduate venue.
Transferable Skills: Research and presentations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Each project has its own timing (number of hours per week and number of weeks), as determined by the individual faculty mentor. See the CURI Digital Olaf database for individual project descriptions and details.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) A student interested in applying for the CURI academic year program must be enrolled as an on-campus St. Olaf student. There is no GPA requirement that must be met in order to apply for the program, but a student’s academic record will be considered during the selection process. Skills are dependent on individual projects.
