CLASS TITLE: INVESTIGATOR II
General Description Of Class
The purpose of the class is to conduct investigations of crimes committed in Richland County and other matters as requested by Solicitor’s Office attorneys; to assist in preparing cases for trial, and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Essential Tasks
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Conducts thorough investigations of criminal cases being prosecuted in General Sessions Court by the Solicitor’s Office; investigates other matters as requested.
Gathers, reviews and analyzes evidence; interviews witnesses; victims and defendants; obtains police reports, criminal records, investigative reports, forensic reports, and witness/victim/defendant statements for use in case investigation and presentation.
Locates witnesses and victims; may operate NCIC computer to locate victims and witnesses as certified.
Serves subpoenas; transports victims and witnesses to court as necessary.
Prepares case notes, interview notes, charts, diagrams of crime scenes, synopses of reports from other agencies, etc.; compiles information for and prepares investigative reports.
Assists with trial preparation, plea negotiations and trial tactics.
Prepares exhibits of evidence.
Assists law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations as appropriate.
Attends training, seminars, workshops, etc., as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills and certifications.
Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, etc.
Position is on-call 24/7.
All other duties as assigned.
Vocational/Educational And Experience Preparation
Vocational/Educational Preparation:
Requires Bachelor’s degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of four years of college education with emphasis in criminal justice, law enforcement or a closely related field.
Special Certifications And Licenses:
Must possess S.C. Criminal Justice Academy basic law enforcement certification; must possess firearms certification.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Experience Requirements:
Requires five years of experience.
