The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including: GP Clinics, Primary Health Care, Counselling, NDIS and community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.
The SWAMS is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.
SWAMS encourage applications from Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners/ Indigenous Outreach Workers or Aboriginal staff with experience in community engagement.
This role will provide you with an opportunity to be involved in community engagement, education, health promotion, advocacy and identifying opportunities to increase testing and management of sexually transmitted infections. The role will be based in Bunbury with travel to SWAMS outreach clinics. The position will involve both working within a team and independently.
SWAMS are looking for someone with well-developed communication skills to effectively engage with community and external stakeholders and to provide culturally appropriate education and health care which meets the needs of the community. Your role will include but not be limited to;
- Work collaboratively with other staff to improve access to and delivery of culturally safe sexual and reproductive health services.
- Arrange and/or perform sexual health screening assessments, referrals, recalls and promote the integration of STI testing into routine primary health care, including adult health checks.
- Work in a way that is appropriate to gender sensitivities operating in the Aboriginal community.
- Engage with community members, community stakeholders and representatives to ensure community consultation and engagement processes are established and maintained to aid service planning for the sexual health program.
- Providing Education to our Indigenous Youth about Sexual Health.
Essential Criteria
