The Administrative Services Division encompasses the Director's Office, which sets strategic directions for the agency, and offices that provide agency management and support services.
The Office of Legal Services supports the mission of DAS by providing services to advance and protect the legal responsibilities and rights of the department through the development of solutions designed to minimize legal liabilities.
Within the Office of Legal Services is the Office of Risk Management, which provides comprehensive risk management programs and services to all state agencies, boards, and commissions, as well as the judicial and legislative branches of state government. Risk Management is responsible for the administration of self-insurance and private insurance programs protecting the assets and liabilities of the State of Ohio.
Job Description
What You'll Do:
Under direction of Risk Claims Manager & Risk Administrator, processes & adjusts catastrophic & complex multi-line vehicle & non-vehicle property damage & bodily injury claims:
- examines, processes, and adjusts all assigned liability claims and claim files (e.g., property damage, bodily injury, litigation and subrogation) according to rules, regulations, guidelines and established agency policy and procedures and Ohio Revised Code;
- processes claim documents in timely and accurate manner;
- analyzes data and uses sound judgment to establish case re-serves;
- evaluates claims and negotiates monetary settlements and identifies potential defense strategies;
- performs ongoing review of liability insurance law and revisions.
Investigates complex liability claims including catastrophic bodily injury cases:
- obtains information from claimants via telephone, written form and/or in person;
- answers inquiries from claimants and attorneys concerning claim processes;
- contacts physicians regarding medical information, claimants regarding lost wages and attorneys, body shops and insurance companies for policy and claim related information;
- authorizes vehicle rentals;
- assigns independent adjusters and salvage companies;
- recovers monies for losses to state-owned equipment for damages sustained in not-at-fault accidents.
Maintains accurate and complete electronic claims files:
- ensures all pertinent information is in file to support payments and future audits;
- updates claim information electronically, prepares vehicle liability reports concerning various activities.

Qualifications
-48 mos. exp. in processing insurance claims which included 12 mos. exp. in catastrophic property & casualty claims.
-Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in business, public administration, or related field; 24 mos. exp. processing property, liability & subrogation claims which includes 12 mos. in catastrophic property & casualty claims.
-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Job Skills: Claims Examination
Hourly wage is expected to be paid at step one of the pay range associated with the position for candidates who are new employees of the State of Ohio. Current employees of the state will be placed in the appropriate step based on any applicable union contract and/or requirements of the Ohio Revised Code.
