Job Title:   Student Ta – Sos-115-A (Calvery), F25

Reports to:   Suzannah Calvery

Class Times:

Mondays and Wednesdays – 10:30 - 11:50 a.m.

Essential Functions

Prepare for and attend the course to which you are assigned as a TA. Lead discussions as needed, offer support to students as needed, and assist in minor grading as needed.

  1. Hours: Please expect to attend the class to which you're assigned. Be there a few minutes early and plan to leave a few minutes late (unless already arranged otherwise) so we can talk through what I need from you outside of class hours. Most of your work will take place during class time. Finally, I may ask you to grade assignments occasionally. It will not be on a weekly basis, and I will let you know in advance so you can plan your week accordingly.
  2. Preparation: I expect you to be present and ready to engage with the class during each class period. You are responsible for having read/watched/listened to the same content as the students (which in most cases you already have from when you were in class). During discussion time, your main role is to listen - please don't participate unless I invite you to because we want the current students to have precedence in discussions. During group discussions when we split into smaller groups, I will ask you to lead a group. This entails preparing some ideas for the group. I will generally give you some ideas to use, but you need to be comfortable offering up your own ideas and/or guiding the group discussion without me.
  3. Discussion Leader Role: This role is one of gentle encouragement. You may need to facilitate turn-taking. You may need to redirect if a conversation is becoming hostile or clearly uncomfortable for students. Your discomfort can be a guide but should not be the determining factor. Watch body language and listen for the tone of those around you. If people are shutting down, refusing to speak, raising voices, or making personal attacks - it's time to shut it down and redirect. Sometimes that may mean taking a short break before resuming conversation. Always feel comfortable asking me to step in. If you do have to redirect or hear something that concerns you, I would like you to report it to me so I can be aware for future discussions and watch for patterns.
