What is the role?
The Senior Manager Operational Risk Management Governance acts as the first line of defense for operational risk, responsible for assisting Canadian Banking (CB) business and functions in identifying and mitigating operational risk. The role is responsible for leading the 1B Operational Risk ORE program for Personal Banking and Commercial Banking (PB & CB). The senior manager role supports PB & CB leaders by providing advice and subject matter expertise in the management, mitigation, and reporting of operational risks. They will also lead a team of operational risk experts executing the operational risk event program, as well as work with a risk and control mindset and with the ability to use a risk-based approach. Finally senior manager will collaborate with GRM Operational Risk to ensure adherence of PB & CB’s practices with the enterprise ORM programs.
What will you do?
Risk Identification and Measurement:
- Accountable to ensure the ORE program is executed in compliance with the RBC Enterprise Standard for Operational Risk Events.
- Establish, maintain, and document the execution procedures for the ORE program.
- Responsible for communicating ORE policies and program updates, as well as a successful implementation across PB & CB lines of business.
- Establish and lead a robust quality assurance process to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of ORE data.
- Manage the escalation process for material internal events in accordance with the escalation protocol set out in the ORE Standard.
- Responsible for tracking, monitoring, and reporting of ORE program requirements, root cause analysis for material OREs, trends and themes of internal events.
- Investigate OREs to assess for potential systemic weaknesses; engage appropriate stakeholders to deliver common theme analysis.
- Manage and respond to requests from stakeholders relating to ad-hoc reviews, internal audits, and regulatory exams.
Reporting:
- Responsible for the preparation of monthly and quarterly operational risk event reports for PB & CB.
- Accountable for the accuracy and completeness attestation for PB & CB’s internal loss data (with G/L impact).
- Deliver timely and accurate regular and ad-hoc reporting to senior executives, management teams, GRM, and regulators, when required, to raise risk awareness, ensure program compliance, and support risk-informed decision making.
- Manage or back up other governance processes which are delegated to PB & CB’s operational risk governance team, e.g., reporting of key reputation risk matters and maintaining a list of PCO’s monitored employees.
People Management:
- Manage and coach the ORE team to support the execution of the ORE Program in PB & CB.
- Support employees to adapt to new ways of living, working, and collaborating.
- Recognize team members and work to unlock potential of our talents.
Must-have:
- 7+ years of relevant leadership experience
- Strong presentation and communication (written and verbal) skills
- Extensive Knowledge of Canadian Banking products, processes and organization
- Strong problem solving, analytical (including qualitative analysis,) research and quantitative skills
- Impact and influence and collaboration are the priority capacities for the role

- University Degree, or equivalent
