Description
The Mechanical Technician II position requires an experienced technician who can perform in three different specialties: mechanical equipment maintenance, welding, and/or operation of machine tools. The first will perform and occasionally lead maintenance of mechanical equipment under IMG responsibility and both latter, will support in maintenance and/or projects related requirements, both internal as regularly, for other areas within the Organization.
Equipment to be maintained includes generators, pumps, motors, compressors, hydraulic systems and others, mostly related to Generation Plant, that includes LPG and Diesel stations, three multifuel turbines and auxiliary systems. Activities like reparation and fabrication of elements and solutions using machine tools, mechanical laboratory instruments, welding technics as TIG, MIG and/or manual arc are requirements to be covered by the position. Finally, the Mec. Tech. II is responsible to use and maintain machines as technician shall comply with according and demonstrated experience and related certifications
The position is responsible for performing both programmed and corrective maintenance tasks of a moderate technical difficulty and specialization, as well as providing technical and operational support to other activities and projects. Other duties include evaluation, technical assistance and reparation of mechanical technical issues, under the lead of IMG Mechanical Specialists.
He/she will be part of a multidisciplinary team, which will also be requested to support other ALMA’s technical areas, supporting the top-level goal of high availability of assets, safety, and high-performance operation of the Observatory.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand and apply all of ALMA’s Policies, Plans, and Programs related to Health, Safety, Environment, and Communities along all premises of Risk Management and ALMA Fundamental Statements and Values.
- Analyze, understand and apply ALMA’s Procedures and all related technical information available within Service Manuals, Spare Parts Catalogues, Special Instructions, Service Letters, or any other means for carrying our his/her task, thus paying special care to abide by all given aspects on Quality, Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Safety.
- Accomplish tasks on both programmed maintenance and corrective repairs for mechanical equipment under IMG responsibility.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and repair moderate level malfunctions on mechanical systems and equipment components.
- Oversee mechanical work-related activities and tasks performed at the site by internal and external staff.
- Support in maintenance and control of the mechanical premises (workshop, machine shop, welding shop, measurement laboratories).
- Tutoring and train of newcomers in Mechanical Technician duties.
- Fill in task and assigned job reports by using the CMMS web-based application, together with the use of all other computing applications, in order to log whatever information related to the already accomplished tasks.
- Perform assigned tasks dutifully and proactively. Assist activities from other specialties within the scope of his/her abilities and complying all safety and technical requirements.
- Actively interact with other areas staff, in order to ensure a proper collaborative and coordinated workspace at the site.
- Carry out any other previously designated task given by the Organization, in relation to its specialty and functions.
Working Conditions
- The position is based at the ALMA Operations Support Facility (OSF, 2900 masl) and occasionally at the Array Operations Site (5000 masl), near San Pedro de Atacama, working an 8x6 shift schedule (8 days of work, followed by 6 days off). Transportation to and from designated pick-up points is provided.
- Physical health compatible with high altitude conditions. A successful High Altitude Medical Exam is a necessary condition of employment.
- Work is typically performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, near moving mechanisms and/or electrical equipment.
- Occasionally required to crouch, kneel, climb or balance and stoop.

Minimum Requirement (Must Have):
- Mechanical Technician Degree and/or equivalent relevant proven experience in related matters of the job.
- Minimum experience of five years performing in a similar mechanical maintenance environment and duties.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and be technically competent in overall knowledge.
- Technical ability using mechanical hand tools, as different types of wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, levels, measuring tools, electrical tools, etc.
- Complies with at least one of the following requirements:
o Proved welding skills, knowledge, experience, and certifications.
o Machine Tools knowledge, practice, and skill, medium level in designing and manufacturing.
o Relevant and proven experience performing maintenance & operation of mechanical equipment.
- English Level: A1- ideally A2. Elementary ability to read and understand equipment manuals, instructions and technical documentation in English. Can communicate well about simple, everyday issues and can exchange routine information.
- Basic user experience for working with spreadsheets, word processors, planning programs and diverse web utilities.
- Valid Driver’s License Type “B”.
- Pass a skill and knowledge-based exam concerning mechanical systems.
Desirable Requirements (an asset if present):
- Generation Systems Operations and/or Maintenance knowledge and experience is an asset.
- CNC Machine tools knowledge and experience is an asset.
- CBM & predictive maintenance practical tools knowledge, e.g. vibrational analysis, tribology, thermography, is an asset.
