The mission of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) is to work in partnership with

communities to protect and promote the health and well-being of all Boston residents, especially

those impacted by racism and systemic inequities. The BPHC sets an expectation that all staff and

leadership commit, individually and as part of the BPHC team, to hold ourselves accountable to

establishing a culture of anti-racism and advance racial equity and justice through each of our

bureaus, programs, and offices.

The Office of Violence Prevention Special Projects Manager is responsible for leading, coordinating,

and delivering special projects that support community well-being, prevent violence, and improve

public-health outcomes. This role involves working collaboratively across departments, agencies,

and community partners to develop and implement innovative, data-informed strategies that

address the root causes of violence. The ideal candidate is a proactive, equity-driven leader with

strong project management experience, and the ability to translate ideas into action within a public

health-centered working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Leadership & Management:

○ Project manage key OVP Bureau priorities, utilizing project management tools and
maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of project progress.
○ Ensure alignment with broader citywide/community safety and violence prevention
strategies and priorities.
○ Organize regular external and internal meetings including advisory boards and
steering committee meetings.
○ Manage communication with external stakeholders around key projects in
partnership with OVP leadership.

Strategic Planning & Analysis:

○ Conduct research and data analysis to inform project design and decision-making.
○ Identify trends, gaps, and opportunities in local public health data and community
feedback.
○ Support strategic plan monitoring and implementation.

Evaluation & Impact Assessment:

○ Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of projects and pilots that aim to prevent
violence, using data and feedback to refine strategies.
○ Provide periodic updates related to the progress, implementation and impact of
projects.

Cross-Departmental Coordination:

○ Collaborate effectively with staff across BPHC, other city departments, and external
organizations to execute key deliverables.
○ Establish and maintain effective working relationships that value diverse experiences
and perspectives.

Other Responsibilities:

  • ○ Manage and implement special time-limited projects.
  • ○ Draft and produce memos, presentations, reports, flyers, policies, and other forms of
  • communication.
  • ○ Work in a confidential capacity with members of the OVP Leadership Team and
  • Executive Office.
  • ○ Work to help BPHC become an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the
  • standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
  • ○ Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications

● Master's degree in public health/public policy/health sciences or related degree, plus 3-5
years of experience (or bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience).
● Commitment to the promotion of health equity, inclusion, and diversity within BPHC and the
community.
● Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the
social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to
advance racial justice and health equity.
● Experience with project management principles and tools, including project management
platforms.
● Experience managing projects with flexible timelines and iterative deliverables.
● Self-directed with ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple
priorities simultaneously, including time-sensitive requests.
● Exceptional communication skills (written and oral) and attention to detail.
● Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
● Demonstrated ability to work independently.
● Skill with Windows Office Package (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and ability to
learn new software applications and technology
