The Opportunity
Otter.ai is redefining how enterprises capture, share, and act on conversations. We are looking for a seasoned Director of Engineering to lead a team of Engineering Managers and Software Engineers building enterprise-grade products. The ideal candidate has a proven track record navigating the unique challenges of compliance, security, IT, and legal requirements, while scaling products that enterprises trust every day.
This role demands a strategic yet hands-on leader who can set clear priorities, mentor teams to reach their full potential, and ensure that Otter’s solutions meet the highest standards for enterprise customers. You’ll drive the foundations that make Otter enterprise-ready—admin & security, integrations, and vertical solutions—and deliver tailored value for financial services, recruiting, healthcare, and education.
Your Impact
Leadership and Team Management
- Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to the enterprise product engineering team, aligning objectives and priorities with the company’s overarching goals.
- Navigate ambiguity and set clear priorities for multiple projects and teams, ensuring accountability and measurable impact.
- Mentor and develop team members, nurturing a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Lead by example, fostering a positive, inclusive, and empowering work environment where team members are motivated to excel.
Project & Program Management
- Oversee the end-to-end planning, execution, and delivery of software development projects, ensuring they meet timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Partner with cross-functional teams—including product management, sales, customer success, design, data, IT, and quality assurance—to define project requirements and priorities.
- Proactively identify and mitigate risks, making data-driven decisions to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Ensure enterprise readiness in all deliverables, from scalability to compliance with security, legal, and regulatory frameworks.
Enterprise Product Mindset
- Develop a deep understanding of enterprise customer needs, including compliance (SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA), IT integration, and legal/security considerations.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, Sales, and Customer Success to ensure engineering efforts support enterprise adoption and long-term sustainability.
- Translate complex enterprise requirements into actionable technical objectives, ensuring the engineering team understands the “why” and the enterprise/vertical context behind the work.
- Encourage the team to think beyond technical implementation, considering end-user trust, data privacy, and organizational integration.
Technical Leadership
- Stay at the forefront of industry best practices, emerging technologies, and trends in enterprise software development.
- Provide technical leadership and expertise, conducting thorough architectural assessments, performance evaluations, and compliance readiness reviews as needed.
- Cultivate a culture of innovation and accountability, encouraging the team to explore new approaches while maintaining enterprise-grade standards.
Process Improvement
- Continuously assess and refine development processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and enterprise scalability.
- Champion the implementation of agile practices and tools to streamline development workflows, improve collaboration, and increase transparency.
- Lead initiatives to improve security, automate compliance checks, and reduce operational overhead while accelerating time to market.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Brings 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years in leadership or management roles.
- Has experience building and delivering enterprise software products, including meeting compliance, security, and IT integration requirements.
- Possesses a strong technical background in software development and enterprise architecture.
- Demonstrates exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and align teams toward common goals.
- Has experience implementing agile methodologies and tools such as Scrum, Kanban, Jira, etc.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and can adapt to shifting priorities and enterprise customer needs.
