The postdoctoral research associate will be responsible for literature review, planning and execution of laboratory and/or field experiments (with the support of the PI), and analysis of data as needed to support a USCRP-funded project studying plant biomechanics and sediment transport mechanisms in coastal areas. The postdoc will also complete manuscripts on ongoing and completed research, and may help advise a senior project team. The postdoc will have experience working on sediment transport problems related to pressure fields and will work in the Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory at UNH.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Literature review and background research on plant biomechanics and sediment transport in vegetated, coastal regions. (15%)
Test a tunable-stiffness model plant in the Environmental Flows Water Tunnel in order to determine model improvements needed and collect preliminary data on the variation of sediment transport and near-bed turbulent velocity and pressure fields in the wake of plants of varying stiffness. Co-supervise a senior project team related to some of these tasks. (50%)
Work on manuscripts of completed field and numerical work (35%)
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Ocean Engineering or related field
Experience with programming and analysis in Matlab or similar programming language
Experience with hands-on experimental, field, or engineering design work
Experience contributing to a diverse working environment
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to work individually as well as part of a broader team
Ability to create plans and deadlines, and meet benchmarks with the support of the primary supervisor
Strong writing and oral communication skills required
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in interdisciplinary ocean research
