The position is for a Mechanical Engineering Intern. The candidate will work within a Technology Development team providing support for day-to-day production issues as well as longer term materials design problems. The production support is a hands-on, energetic environment. The scope of potential tasks includes materials selection/replacement, sensor design, failure analysis, research, and process review. These tasks support a variety of aerospace products built on-site, ranging from fuel sensing systems, electronic braking systems, actuation/controller systems, and HUMS. This position requires excellent organization, leadership, communication, and engineering design skills.
What You Will Do:
- Support initiatives to identify and develop new or improved materials, processes, fabrication, and assembly techniques for new product design and manufacturing.
- Troubleshoot, analyze, and implement design improvements.
- Collaborate with internal customers to define production issues.
- Utilize failure analysis equipment (optical microscope, XRF, SEM, X-ray) to determine root cause.
- Analyze material composition and recommend alternates or other action.
- Work with technical leads to understand customer and contractual requirements and supplier quality to implement solutions aligning with industry standards and practices.
- Review product against drawing specifications and determine if components meet requirements.
- Ability to organize tasks and be a self-starter.
- Ability to work productively within a team environment.
- Ability to maintain responsibility and accountability for tasks/projects.
What You Will Learn:
- Learn about applied research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines and optical sensing technologies
- Learn test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess operating condition effects. Produce parts, designs, or sketches for machines, components, systems or work orders / purchase requests

Basic Qualifications:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Pursuing Bachelor’s (or advanced) degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering
- Previous experience and knowledge in Materials and Process engineering or research topics in Materials Science, especially related to material failure modes for non-ferrous metals, composites, and polymers commonly used in the aerospace industry.
- Previous experience in writing technical reports.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
