Responsibilities
The minimum salary for this position is $6375 per 3-credit course. The Education Department at the University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for one or more part-time faculty position(s) at the Lecturer I level for the Fall 2024 semester. The position(s) requires teaching undergraduate and graduate level course work for future teachers in language arts and literacy assessment. Descriptions of the courses to be taught are found below. We are looking for a creative, collaborative, and energetic faculty member with a specialization in literacy to join our Birth to Grade 12 team. Responsibilities will include teaching courses, collaborating with schools, supervising students while in schools. These courses will primarily be taught face-to-face during the school day. Course descriptions:
EDR 330: Integrated Language Arts (3-6)
Overview of literacy processes and instruction for children in grades 3-6, with emphasis on current views of literacy as it relates to instructional strategies and techniques for improving student learning. Assignments, activities and discussions build on and refine teacher candidate knowledge of literacy learning and instruction. (Fall only course)
EDR 341: Teaching in the Linguistically & Culturally Diverse Classroom
Introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and culturally diverse students. Examination of principles, theories and current practices in the field of TESOL and best practices in supporting cultural diversity within the classroom; linguistic and cultural needs of all students; application of standards-based curriculum and instruction for ELL students and culturally diverse students in mainstream classrooms; assessment of English language proficiency and content area learning; resources and professionalism for teachers working with linguistically and culturally diverse students. (Winter only course)
EDR 440: Literacy Assessment and Methods (PK-6)
Overview of current approaches to methods and assessments of literacy development of PK-6 students. Assessment-focused planning and instruction for students with diverse literacy abilities and needs; use of informal and formal assessment materials to analyze literacy strengths and difficulties. Teacher candidates develop an assessment portfolio and a case study report on differentiated instruction and support of literacy development for individual students. Addresses requirements of Public Law 32 (PA 119). (Fall and Winter)
EDR 541: Assessment-Based Literacy Instruction in Secondary Classrooms
Overview of classroom literacy assessment for teachers of grades 6-12 addresses all requirements in PA 118. Provides literacy assessment tools and methods of differentiating instruction in secondary classrooms. Fieldwork required. (Winter only)
Requirements include an earned Master's degree in the field of literacy education, teaching, or related field. A valid or previous teaching certificate in elementary and/or middle grades with a Reading/Literacy Specialist endorsement. A minimum of 3 to 5 years teaching experience in the elementary or middle grade settings. Experience working with and/or overseeing field placements. Experience mentoring students in elementary or middle school settings. Knowledge and experience implementing assessments and best practices in elementary and/or middle grade. Compassionate and encouraging demeanor that inspires confidence and determination. Demonstrated qualifications in both relevant subject matter and the principles of instruction. Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills. Teaching availability in daytimes and/or evenings. Ability to drive to schools within 50 miles of the University of Michigan-Flint campus. Availability during the typical education system operating hours (Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm). Knowledge of and capacity to interface with various technological platforms and data tracking systems, including Canvas and Zoom.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in literacy/language arts, or a related field, with coursework in reading/language arts
- Expertise in literacy education and the English Language Arts
- Expertise in literacy assessment
- Teaching certificate
- 3-5 years experience teaching literacy/language arts in PK-6 classrooms
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Elementary Literacy Education or related field.
- Reading/Literacy Specialist endorsement
- Experience teaching literacy/ELA in grades 3-6
- Experience supervising undergraduate students, mentoring beginning teachers and/or literacy leadership role in school or district
