Opportunity Snapshot:
- As a Senior Staff Engineer you set the standard in our engineering practice by leading through example, you will play a pivotal role in leading complex engineering initiatives, providing technical leadership and driving innovation to achieve our most challenging digital and technology objectives. You will collaborate with multiple cross-functional teams to promote a strong build, own and operate culture, mentor other engineers, and contribute to shaping robust software architectures and designs that meet business needs today and into the future.
- As a senior technical leader, your primary responsibility will be to ensure that engineering practices delivered through the use of modern toolkits are robust and efficient to comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to lead the architectural design, standardisation and deployment of governance tooling across Bupa APAC.
- Your expertise will drive the future-thinking and strategic roadmap of our governance engineering approach, ensuring that modern, cutting-edge solutions are deployed, standardised and scaled across Bupa’s systems. Through this, you will empower teams to consistently deliver transformative value to Bupa’s customers, enhance strategic outcomes, and support the organisation's commitment to innovation and excellence.
- The role may be embedded into a Crew model but also operate in a cross-functional way to support across the enterprise.

Your Contribution:
Strategic Impact
- Monitor key performance indicators such as compliance, data quality, risk mitigation, accessibility, and team adoption.
- Partner with leadership to identify opportunities for engineering ecosystem optimisation and business transformation.
- Own the engineering space as the most senior engineer—lead strategic design, development, and implementation of scalable systems.
- Guide architectural decisions and shape the technical vision for projects.
Technical Excellence
- Serve as the SME and senior advisor on technical matters.
- Identify and resolve technical gaps in governance controls through automation and scalable solutions.
- Align governance engineering deliverables with Bupa’s strategic goals.
- Mentor engineers and uplift governance practices across the organisation.
- Bridge technical and non-technical discussions to deliver value.
- Promote modern tools, frameworks, and best practices.
Innovation & Standardisation
- Lead the strategic roadmap for governance engineering using cutting-edge solutions.
- Champion new technologies for data and AI governance, creating scalable, reusable frameworks.
Team Education
- Drive education on standards, deployment practices, and reusable patterns.
- Promote best practices in testing, usage, and data governance.
- Conduct skills assessments, address gaps, and support team development through training and mentorship.
Performance & Reliability
- Continuously improve reliability, security, usability, and performance of governance technologies.
- Oversee testing and validation of new features.
- Collaborate with Product Owners to ensure smooth rollout and integration of new tools.
- Troubleshoot complex issues and conduct code reviews for quality assurance.
Governance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure alignment with industry standards, regulations, and internal policies through modern tech and processes.
- Identify and implement development process improvements.
- Stay current with industry trends to ensure use of effective, modern solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to all stakeholders.
Qualifications and training
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field—or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years leading teams and mentoring developers.
- Proficient in multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Go) with strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and protocols (HTTP/REST, SQL, YAML, JSON).
- Deep experience in system architecture, distributed systems, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), including serverless solutions.
- Skilled in modern development tools and frameworks (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD).
- Proven leadership in technical delivery and team empowerment.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
