Entry position. A Technician I is trained on a combination of the tasks to include decontamination of surgical instruments and instrument assembly. Advancement to Technician II is determined by length of employment and ability to perform these tasks to the satisfaction of the Charge Technicians and the Manager of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD).Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Major Job Functions
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Pick up used equipment and instrumentation from the units within the facility and return the equipment to the decontamination area for processing, document equipment picked up, decontaminate equipment and prepare it for use, put equipment away in the proper inventory locations.
Perform the tasks associated with the decontamination in SPD, process instruments received for mechanical decontamination, hand-wash instruments that are not suitable for mechanical decontamination utilizing enzymatic cleaners and liquid decontaminants.
Decontaminate and prepare emergency carts for restock.
Maintain equipment and supplies in the decontamination area, reports needed maintenance.
Utilize requisition sheets provided by the surgical and obstetrical units to provide the instrumentation and supplies needed to perform surgeries and deliveries.
Document all supplies issued to the surgical and obstetrical units to allow inventory control procedures to be performed, inputs supply documentation to decrement the inventory and issue to the user.
Document all cases pulled by SPD, provides documentation to Training Coordinator for input into the productivity reports.
Assist instrument technicians with the daily task of assembly and sterilization of instruments; perform the duties associated with the assembly of instruments sets.
Understand the sterilization processes utilized by Sterile Processing, perform the duties associated with sterilization.
Utilize the Inventory Control system to issue or credit supplies to the users throughout the facility.

Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training:
High school graduate or equivalent required
Instrument trained or Operating Room experience preferred
Work Experience:
6-months Sterile Processing Department or equivalent experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate these when necessary.
Motor coordination and manual dexterity are required to decontaminate, process, and sterilize instruments and equipment.
Must be able to pull cases needed for surgical procedures
Read, write and understand English
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to see and hear.
Visual acuity is necessary when working with delicate instruments.
Manual dexterity required when reaching, handling, adjusting and lifting instrument trays or boxes that may weigh as much as 50 pounds.
Pushing carts with loaded weight as much as much as 100 pounds
long periods of standing are required to perform daily activities
