Position Summary
The Assistant Vice President of Tax will independently lead and manage the tax compliance function for Berkshire Residential Investments. They will be a key participant in tax planning strategies with respect to fund structuring, investments, and investor reporting. They will collaborate cross-functionally to identify and implement efficient solutions that support business objectives and regulatory requirements. They will keep up-to-date with changes to federal and state income tax laws and convey information to the operations teams where necessary.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Independently review complex Federal, state, and local income tax returns (partnership and corporate)
- Assist in developing tax structures for investments and create tax models which showcase the tax adjusted returns for investors
- Understand and ensures appropriate application of all tax laws company-wide to effectively minimize liabilities, risks, and exposures
- Act as a liaison between the tax department and the other business organizations within Berkshire Residential Investments and its affiliates
- Respond to taxing authorities, tax notices and information requests
- Able to identify and research tax issues independently
- Lead tax-related calls and meetings with advisors and/or internal Berkshire teams when appropriate
- Consistently demonstrate use of tact and discretion
Knowledge/Experience:
- 8-10 years of experience in the U.S. real estate partnership and REIT tax industry including preparation and review of tax return compliance and consulting.
- Demonstrated management skills with track record of building teams and identifying, mentoring, and growing talent in-person and virtual
- Demonstrate an advanced level of understanding of relevant income tax concepts and how they are applied to different entities, especially equity and mortgage REITs. Able to explain tax rules and their application to non-tax professionals within the organization. Lead calls and meetings with advisors and/or internal Berkshire teams.
- Has comprehensive knowledge of the various fund structures including domestic and foreign blocker structures.
- Maintains working knowledge of new and proposed tax legislation with the assistance of available tax technical tools.
- Aptitude for organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple priorities, using critical thinking and problem solving
- Demonstrated multi-modal communication style that reaches every stakeholder, specifically excellent verbal, and written communications
- Ability to communicate with and manage up to senior management
- Collaborative working style with inclusive work and thinking behaviors, commitment to excellence in teams and work product, with a strong work ethic
- Demonstrate emotional intelligence in high pressure and sensitive situations
- Tenacity, patience, and perseverance to work with business deals from beginning to end of process

- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and communications of information

- Demonstrated high level of ethics and integrity with a straightforward and honest approach
Technical/Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required
- CPA or Enrolled Agent preferred
- Demonstrated ability to use and learn new technology (e.g., computers/hardware, mobile, software, cloud-based programs)
- Proficiency with computers, keyboards, monitors and telephone headsets.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Products (e.g., Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, Power Point)
