Job Description Summary
As a Research Engineer in the Materials Science and Engineering at the GE Vernova Advanced Research Center in India, you will play a key role in advancing the science, development, testing and qualification of materials. You will focus on experimental investigations in metallurgy and materials engineering to support component durability, repair, and manufacturing innovations across energy technologies.This role is suited for a motivated experimental materials engineer with strong metallurgical expertise and industrial R&D exposure. The researcher will be expected to deliver impactful experimental insights into material behavior, repair technologies, and qualification processes that support the design and durability of next-generation energy systems.
Job Description
Roles And Responsibilities
Experimental Research & Development
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments in alloy development, heat treatment, welding, brazing, and repair technologies.
- Carry out materials processing including casting, forging, joining, and surface treatments for structural materials.
- Perform detailed metallurgical investigations to evaluate material performance under service conditions.
Materials Testing and Characterization
- Execute microstructural characterization using optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, sample preparation, and related techniques.
- Conduct mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, creep, fatigue, fracture) and correlate with microstructure.
- Apply inspection methods (NDE/ultrasonic, X-ray, eddy current) where applicable to validate component health.
Failure Analysis & Performance Studies
- Perform root-cause investigations of material and component failures and recommend corrective actions.
- Evaluate high-temperature degradation, oxidation, and corrosion mechanisms in Fe, Ni, Co alloys, with exposure to Ti and Al alloys as needed.
Adherence and Practice of Safety-First Principle
- Understand requirements of EHS and champion safety in all the tasks assigned
- Ensure all EHS processes are strictly followed
- Maintain the KPIs for Lab Safety
Collaboration & Supply Chain Engagement
- Work with supply chain and vendor partners on materials qualification, inspection standards, and repair process validation.
- Collaborate across global R&D teams, design engineers, and manufacturing units to deliver integrated materials solutions.
Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation of R&D outcomes.
- Contribute to proposal development, external publications, and conference presentations as appropriate.
- Support continuous learning, training, and mentoring within the team.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (M.Tech) in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
- 3–5 years of industrial R&D experience in materials engineering, preferably in energy, aerospace, or heavy industry sectors.
- Strong background in physical metallurgy of steels, Ni- and Co-based alloys; working knowledge of Ti and Al alloys is desirable.
- Strong understanding of Materials and their Properties that influence the mechanical design.
- Experience with casting, forging, welding, brazing, and heat treatment of structural alloys.
- Hands-on experience with materials testing and characterization techniques (optical, SEM, EDS, XRD, mechanical testing).
- Exposure to vendor qualification, supply chain collaboration, and industrial standards for materials and processes.
- Demonstrated experience in failure analysis and component-level investigations.
- Strong technical communication skills, including technical reporting and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new, unfamiliar technology areas and to abstract system level concepts
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment as “ONE TEAM”
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability and ownership of assigned tasks.
