Executive Director, Facilities Planning & Construction

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Facilities has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Executive Director, Facilities Planning & Construction to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Executive Director, Facilities Planning & Construction oversees all institutional construction activities for the healthcare enterprise at the medical campus and all clinical and ambulatory care facilities. Specifically, the Executive Director, Facilities Planning & Construction executes all facets of new construction, renovation and renewal and replacement projects.

  • Advises managing staff appropriately to coordinate all construction projects to ensure that they meet budget and time constraints and are in accordance with the strategic and master plans.

  • Engages appropriate external sources and contractors to ensure that all construction projects are completed on time and within budget parameters.

  • Responsible for the development and oversight of all construction budgets Develops and presents to senior management the background and rationale for vendor selection, procurement options and budget requests.

  • Serves as point of contact to staff, departments, and the community on issues of facility planning and construction.

  • Ensures all work areas meet quality, safety and compliance standards.

  • Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. 

  • Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements and monitors controls. 

Department Specific Functions

  • Leads, oversees and guides the functions and activities of various departments including of Architecture, Interior Design, Campus Planning and Space Planning and Analysis to ensure a high quality of service in support of the University’s mission and values.

  • Leads, oversees and guides the vision for the Building Design Standards, the Interior Design Standards and Guidelines, the Interior Signage Standards, the Donor Signage Standards, the Space Standards, the Campus Paint Palette Guidelines, the Campus Grounds Standards and Campus Signage and Wayfinding Standards.

  • Leads, oversees and guides the campus master plan, the planning and design of facilities expansion and major renovation efforts in support of the University’s strategic plan.

  • Leads, overseas and guides the development and implementation of departmental design procedures and work process standards.

  • Reviews and evaluates the planning of campus facilities for conformance with the University’s sustainability goals and best practices.

  • Adheres to and Supports the University and unit-level policies and procedures related to the design of facilities and campus environment.

  • Reviews, monitors and assesses team performance and completes periodic reviews.

  • Supports Strategic Planning for the Facilities Operations and Planning Division.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Contribute to long-range facilities master planning efforts.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and space utilization analyses to inform project planning and budget forecasting.

  • Support sustainability initiatives and incorporate green building practices (e.g., LEED, WELL).

  • Lead the architectural planning and design of capital improvement projects, renovations, and new healthcare facilities.

  • Ensure projects reflect user needs, clinical workflows, and compliance with healthcare-specific codes (e.g., NFPA, FGI, ADA, Joint Commission).

  • Review and approve architectural drawings, specifications, and design submittals.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field (Architecture)

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in architectural and healthcare design and planning

  • Registered Architect (RA) preferred

  • NCARB certification preferred.

  • LEED Accredited Professional or similar sustainability credential is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train others.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

  • Deep knowledge of healthcare codes, standards, and best practices.

  • Strong project management and design review skills.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Proficiency in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Suite).

  • Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups and build consensus.
